SCAM ALERT - DON'T SCAN THAT QR CODE!

It’s called a ‘brushing’ scam, and it’s like getting an unsolicited surprise gift from your not-so-friendly neighborhood thief! Expcept they aren't anywhere near your neighborhood.

Picture this: you get a random package from Amazon filled with an unexpected surprise from your Secret Santa. Exciting, right? But wait, there’s no sender info, just your address on the label. Inside, you’ll find a QR code just begging to be scanned to unveil the mystery sender...and who doesn't love a good mystery. (This is why social engineering is so effective.)

Scanning the code could lead to a phishing site where you enter personal information or "login" to a spoofed website of a familiar retailer. This is how crooks try to swipe your personal and financial information, the department explained.

You can toss the gift or keep it as a bizarre conversation starter, but whatever you do, don’t scan that QR code!
