Reno Type will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day, returning to normal business hours Tuesday, September 8.

Labor Day celebrates the social and economic achievements of working people and the labor movement that helped establish many of the rights and working conditions we take for granted today.

At Reno Type, that history is personal. Our shop is proudly represented by IBEW Local 401, making our employees part of a labor tradition that continues today. We think Labor Day is worth more than simply taking a day off. It’s a chance to recognize the people whose work keeps businesses, communities and our economy moving.

And if you’d like to celebrate with us, come see Reno Type at Reno LaborFest at Idlewild Park on Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be live music, food trucks, a Show & Shine, a kids’ zone, hands-on demonstrations from local union apprenticeship programs and more. The event is free and open to the public, and Reno Type will have a booth there.

If you have an active project with a deadline approaching, please plan around Monday’s closure. We’ll respond to messages, emails and phone calls as soon as possible when we reopen Tuesday.

We hope you have a great Labor Day, and we’d love to see you at LaborFest.

The Postal Service raised rates recently. But for some mailers, the rate increase itself may not be the biggest problem.

USPS also changed the way mail qualifies for some of its lower rates.

That matters because a mailing that looks like it should cost only a few percent more based on the new rate chart can end up costing considerably more once the list is processed.

We just saw a pretty dramatic example.

A nonprofit mailing we had previously mailed for about $1,200 in postage came in at roughly $2,000 for the exact same mailing.

Same organization. Same mailing. About $800 more in postage, or roughly a 67% increase.

The change affects commercial Marketing Mail too, but it can be particularly obvious with nonprofit mail because nonprofit postage started at such a low price. Moving a meaningful number of pieces out of the lowest qualification levels can create a huge percentage increase even though the published per-piece rate changes don’t look especially alarming.

So if you’re budgeting a mailing based on what the same job cost last time, be careful.

Looking at the new postage rates isn’t enough. The geographic makeup of your list, and how many pieces now qualify for each rate, can materially change the final number.

We should have recognized the significance of this change sooner. We’re paying much closer attention to it now.

If you have a mailing coming up, especially a nonprofit mailing, it makes sense to have the list processed and the postage estimated before you finalize the budget.

The Hawk Fire is affecting a lot of people in our community, including several members of the Reno Type team.

Some of our employees have been evacuated, and some live very close to the fire. As far as we know, everyone is safe and everyone’s homes are okay. But some of our people will be displaced for a while, and we’re going to make sure they have the time they need to take care of their homes, families and pets.

We don’t anticipate any significant disruption to our customers. We’re open, producing work and making deliveries. But we may be a little short-handed for a while, so if we’re an hour late with a delivery or something takes a little longer than it normally would, we appreciate your grace.

This is bigger than Reno Type.

We’re thinking about everyone who has been evacuated or is waiting to find out what happens next, and we’re grateful for the firefighters and first responders working to protect our community.

For now, we’re taking care of our people and asking everyone else to take care of theirs.

And if you’re involved in the response and can think of a reasonable way Reno Type’s people, trucks, warehouse, printing, mailing or other resources could help, please reach out.

We’ll do what we can.

📢 Reminder: Reno Type will be closed Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

Our phones, email, and production offices will be unavailable for the day, and we'll return to normal business hours on Monday.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a time to reflect on the promise of freedom and opportunity for all. We're proud to join many organizations across the country in recognizing this important day.

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to helping you next week.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice made possible the freedoms and opportunities we often take for granted, including the ability to build businesses, support our families, and serve our communities.

In observance of Memorial Day, Reno Type will be closed on Monday so our team can spend time with family, reflect, and honor those who served.

We wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

Tonight a group of us got together to celebrate Erwin, who wrapped up his last week with Reno Type after five years running our presses.

He’s been an incredible teammate, steady under pressure, deeply skilled, and a huge part of what happens here every day. The kind of person you quietly start depending on so much that you can’t really imagine the place without them.

He’s heading into an exciting new chapter… helping with his family’s HVAC business and preparing for the arrival of his first child in just a couple of weeks.

We’re going to miss him a lot.

Grateful for everything he gave this team, and wishing him and his growing family nothing but success.
