Q2 of 2026 saw a decline in traded volumes across European commodities markets. Despite the drop, benchmark prices displayed significant divergences across sectors, driven by geopolitical shifts and early-summer heatwaves.

📊 Key Market Takeaways for Q2 2026:

➡️ Gas: In Europe prices fell 22% QoQ to end June at €43/MWh (+30% YoY). Supply concerns eased in mid-April following the US-Iran ceasefire agreement.

➡️ Power: German Power benchmark prices dropped sharply in April following the ceasefire before rebounding at the end of June (+19% QoQ, +37% YoY) as heatwaves drove a surge in cooling demand.

➡️Emissions: Traded volumes fell 53% QoQ to 3,661 Mt (-33% YoY), driven by post-compliance unwind following peak Q1 activity, and seasonal reductions in fossil-fuelled thermal generation across Western Europe.

➡️Coal: Benchmark API2 settled flat QoQ at $119/t (+0% QoQ). Traded volumes fell to 189 Mt (-31% QoQ, -3% YoY), this may reflect a global transition towards cleaner energy.

2026 vs. 2022: Why This Energy Shock Looks Different
The recent disruption around the strait of Hormuz has sent shockwaves through the energy sector. As a result: sharp prices moves, TTF day-ahead prices doubling in a matter of days. Energy markets are still reacting to the geopolitical shock that began in Q1 2026, but not in the way they did in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Why? Because the system has evolved. Storage policy, LNG infrastructure, and globalised supply chains have changed how disruptions are absorbed.

Tim Rogers, Founder and Managing Director of Wise Training GmbH explores the role of mandated storage targets, the doubling of EU LNG regasification capacity and infrastructure built to act as a buffer, among other factors.

Manual energy trading can't keep up with CEE's volatile markets.

At ETCSEE 2026 in Budapest, it was clear that extreme price fluctuations, negative solar hours, and complex border tariffs are no longer passing phases but the new normal.

To stay ahead of the curve, it's important for trading desks to automate real-time calculations, turn energy assets on or off as prices shift, and lock in cross-border trades rapidly.

Learn more about the three big challenges we're seeing in Central and Eastern Europe, and how technology is helping to solve these gaps:
