If you were planning a magnetic survey, which approach would you choose?

🚶 Ground magnetics — detailed measurements close to the surface

🚁 UAV magnetics — efficient coverage and access to challenging terrain

The right approach depends on the survey area, terrain, target size, required resolution, accessibility and project objectives.

So, what are you choosing for your next project — ground or UAV?

🚁 What makes a good UAV magnetic survey?

A drone is only part of the equation.

Several factors can influence the quality of a UAV magnetic survey:

🔹 Sensor sensitivity — capture subtle magnetic variations
🔹 Sensor separation — reduce magnetic interference from the UAV
🔹 Flight altitude — balance coverage and resolution
🔹 Line spacing — match the survey design to the target
🔹 Positioning — accurately locate every measurement
🔹 Base-station data — account for temporal magnetic variations
🔹 Processing — turn raw measurements into usable magnetic maps

With the right combination of survey design, flight planning and instrumentation, UAV magnetics can provide detailed insight into the subsurface.

Better survey design + quality instrumentation = better data for interpretation.

During a magnetic survey, Earth’s magnetic field is constantly changing. These natural variations can influence the measurements collected by a survey sensor.

That’s where a magnetic comes in.

A stationary GSM-19 magnetometer continuously monitors changes in the magnetic field while the survey is underway.

Combined with a UAV magnetometer such as the GSMP-35U , base-station data can help account for temporal magnetic variations and support higher-quality survey results.

🚁 GSMP-35U — collect magnetic data from the air.

📍 GSM-19 — monitor the magnetic field from the ground.

Used together for the strongest dataset.
