One of the big changes Is that the concept and term “adequately trained” has been removed entirely. Instead, the new training standard focuses on competency-based training. As you know, each mode of transport requires a special and unique set of competencies and skills. So, it is up to the employers to assess and ensure that workers can execute their tasks competently. While Transport Canada hasn’t issued any specific training requirements, they do specify that general awareness training and job-specific training are both required. This is one of the reasons why we highlight a second big change … “Certificates of Training” will be replaced with “Certificates of competency”. Certificates of competency will need to indicate that workers have received both the general knowledge and function-specific training required by the standard. On January 4, 2023, Health Canada published amendments to the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) with a 3-year transition period, ending on December 14, 2025. During the 3-year transition period, regulated parties can choose to comply with either the former Hazardous Products Regulations or the amended Hazardous Products Regulations, but not a combination of both.

Key changes resulting from the amendments include:
• Improved clarity and precision for certain provisions
• New information elements required on safety data sheets and labels
• Adoption of a new physical hazard class: Chemicals Under Pressure
• A change in name of the physical hazard class “Flammable Aerosols” to “Aerosols”
• A new hazard category for non-flammable aerosols (Aerosols – Category 3)
• Subcategorization of Flammable Gases – Category 1 into 1A and 1B (with the inclusion of pyrophoric gases and chemically unstable gases in subcategory 1A).

Over this six-part series we have highlighted that new hires are the most at risk so the key takeaways have been:

With the highest rates of injury incurred by the newest staff – we need to make a change at the starting blocks. Strategies for Fostering a First-Safety-First Mindset:

It all starts with building a great Safety Culture that provides focus from day one. This “safety is a priority” approach sets the tone for the entire workforce.

Foremost, you must have leadership commitment. Leaders must set clear expectations and leading by example. The way leaders can do this is by participating in safety training, regularly communicate the importance of safety, share safety goals, progress, and any incidents transparently and allocate resources for safety initiatives (such as training programs and safety equipment). Offer a wide range of safety training programs and delivery options. Consider including recognition programs and reward employees who follow safety protocols to encourage a culture where everyone values and practices safety.

Employees also play a vital role through safety practices. Involvement in safety committees, providing suggestions and sharing safety ideas and concerns, holding regular safety meetings, review incidents, brainstorm improvements and using continuous safety training.

Another key towards a safety culture is clear and consistent communication through regular safety meetings, newsletters, or even digital platforms. And Finally, the whole process needs ongoing monitoring and evaluation through areas like audits, incident tracking and employee feedback.

With new hires you should ensure that you have created a complete list of duties, done a full risk evaluation of related interactions and created a risk offset training program for them before they have even started. There is no school like the old school – which means looking at what you have in place already and then carefully evaluating your reliance on the new and latest technologies that you may be using or that they may be bringing.

Outdated risk assessments need to continually evolve. But, when new technologies are deployed they may misinform, be inaccurate, or even encourage unsafe actions.

The Rise of “Miracle” Tech - from wearable gadgets to data analytics platforms claiming instant game-changing insights. These types of tools may be developed or heavily marketed by firms focused on profit rather than having any scientific backing or real-world third-party validation. These types of products can add significant risk to onboarding as they may misinform management and employees, provide inaccurate or irrelevant data, and encourage unsafe training or rehabilitation practices.

To properly vet technology effectively request peer-reviewed evidence as testimonials or marketing brochures alone are not sufficient proof. Seek reviews from people in your field, colleagues or experts. Conduct pilot studies that test the technology with a small group under tight supervision. Ensure you monitor performance metrics, injury/incident rates, and feedback before broad adoption. Pay attention to what your staff are saying and doing.

Safety training programs save lives every day. "Safety is not just a slogan, it's a way of life." Is all you need to know about the value of all of that training investment by all companies combined … saving even just one life is worth it. No one wants to be at the scene of an accident.

Stunningly, 75% of workers have issues with wearing PPE with 56% of workers saying that they just don’t want to, 48% that think it’s not needed, and 36% believe wearing PPE makes their jobs more difficult. This is the data that you need to combat and educate and train for.

Building YOUR Mandatory New Hire Safety Training Program:
Identify YOUR Workplace Hazards: Perform a complete evaluation of possible dangers new employees may encounter in their roles, including physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic risks and understand the level of risk associated with each one. Then tailor YOUR training program accordingly.
Develop Clear Policies and Procedures: Create, review, assign and test your detailed safety rules and steps that address identified dangers.
Design Engaging Training Materials for all Learning Styles: Make sure the content is clear and easy to understand and is interactive by using various media plus hands-on exercises.

New Hires Need Safety - Part 1/6 - Understanding the Importance of New Hire Safety

Both Companies and their Employees rely on work safety: Over-COMMUNICATE is the KEY! Beyond legal requirements - it is vital to provide employees with proper training to prevent accidents, and build awareness, culture, reputation and trust.

Stunningly, 34% of all workplace injuries happen to new hires within their first year. This is due to a new work environment, lack of experience, and not being connected to the company's safety culture.

It all starts by building a great Safety Culture (so much info on how-to google search) from day one. This “safety is a priority” approach sets the tone for the entire workforce. “Safety first, because accidents last”. Leaders, managers and other employees must set clear expectations and lead by example. Show the new employee the seriousness of safety through training, regularly communicated safety goals, and share progress and any incidents transparently.

New employees are eager to show their effectiveness and possibly even look for short cuts. It is far better to discuss procedures - to determine if there are new paths for efficiency, and also, if there are relative dangers versus the current methods and procedures. Emphasize real life incident possibilities related to your workplace (like past incidents) and discuss items why we use lock-out tag-out, or the damage that can occur from a dropped hammer, or how dangerous a forklift can be.

Finally, particularly with new employees, use ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Use discussion, documentation, ongoing training and re-training, reinforcement and audit as well as employee feedback. Emphasis risk/reward and why doing the right job right is so important.

Conclusion: Over COMMUNICATE - To avoid serious workplace accidents that will have serious long-term impacts develop a culture of safety and implement an effective safety and training program. The culture of the organization will drive the attitude towards safety.
