What if we thought about duty logs as more than a record of what happened? That was the question explored by Lindsey Stapleton, Senior Director of Support & Training, and Joslyn Volpi, Customer Support Specialist at Reach, in their presentation, Not Just a Log: Nightly Notes to Support Student Care.

Their message was simple: what we write shapes what happens next.

A duty log can either say: “Quiet night. No issues.” or it can give the next team member the context they need to understand what happened, notice emerging patterns and determine whether follow-up is needed.

The difference often comes down to how we structure what we write. Lindsey and Joslyn shared a simple framework for turning everyday observations into more meaningful handoffs.

We're taking a deeper look at how schools can move from compliance to care, including examples of effective duty notes, practical follow-up systems and ways to create better continuity of care. Is this a topic you'd like us to explore further? Let us know in the comments.

Notice the small details. Write for the next adult. Make the handoff count.

As new terms begin and students return to campus, we’re excited to celebrate the release of the second edition of OneTrusted Adult by our partner, Dr. Brooklyn Raney.

Reach has been championing Brooklyn’s work for years, and we’re thrilled to see this important resource return with new research, fresh perspectives and practical tools for the people who support young people every day.

The second edition of One Trusted Adult: How to Build Strong Connections & Healthy Boundaries with Young People explores how educators and youth-serving professionals can build meaningful connections, create healthy boundaries and strengthen networks of support around every student.

Congratulations, Brooklyn, on the release of this new edition. We can’t wait to see the conversations and impact it continues to inspire.

The 50th edition of Within Reach is here. For this milestone edition, we’re sharing a timely conversation from Bridget Johnson, Founder of the Dean's Roundtable, on a topic that deserves more attention: faculty onboarding.

Onboarding is often treated as something that happens in the weeks before school starts. But what if it begins the moment a new hire first interacts with your school, and continues well beyond their first year?

In “Faculty Onboarding in Independent Schools: Why Getting It Right Changes Everything,” Bridget Johnson speaks with Meera Shah of Trey Education about building belonging, creating meaningful mentorship, supporting department chairs, and designing onboarding around what it actually means to thrive in a school community.

Because getting onboarding right isn’t just about helping staff get settled. It can shape retention, culture, performance, and ultimately the student experience.

Preparing for a new school year shouldn’t have to happen alone.

One of the benefits of being part of the Reach (Americas) community is access to The Taproom, a dedicated space where student life professionals and educators connect to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another.

Whether you're reviewing policies, refining workflows, planning orientation, or looking for fresh approaches to student wellbeing, chances are someone in the community has tackled the same challenge or is actively working on a solution!

Beyond discussions, The Taproom also offers webinars, office hours, professional learning opportunities, and insights from experienced practitioners across our network.
