As we wrap up National Science Month, the UWC Immersive Zone proudly visited Protea Heights Academy, where we showcased how immersive technologies are transforming the way we learn, explore, and experience science.

From VR and AR to interactive 3D experiences, learners had the opportunity to see how innovation is reshaping scientific discovery, education, and problem-solving. By bringing complex concepts to life, immersive technology makes science more engaging, accessible, and inspiring for the next generation of innovators.

A heartfelt thank you to South African National Space Agency (SANSA)for inviting us, the learners, educators, and staff at Protea Heights Academy for welcoming us and embracing the future of science and technology.

What happens when archives meet immersive technology?

The UWC Immersive Zone (UIZ) team visited Facts and Fabulations, a thought-provoking exhibition curated by Prof. Marcos Martins that combines archival material, audio narratives and AR to reimagine how history is experienced through interpreting photographs.

We were especially proud to see the UIZ be acknowledged in the exhibition. Marcos highlights the support he received with technological tools used to create the exhibition’s installations, using the AR platform JigSpace.

Congratulations to Marcos Martins and his team of fabulators on this phenomenal and thought-provoking exhibition, which challenges audiences to explore the intersection of history, memory, imagination and immersive technology.

A tiny hatchling 🐢 A massive ocean 🌊 A growing threat ⚠️

We’ve created a new interactive AR experience, built in JigSpace, following the journey of Loggerhead Turtle Hatchlings along the Western Cape coastline.
It was designed for youth education, helping young people understand marine conservation and explore the realities of plastic pollution through immersive, visual storytelling.
Because protecting our oceans starts with awareness ♻️

Proud to have worked with MSC student Amicia Mishca Canterbury, Supervisor Prof Anusha Rajkaran from The University of the Western Cape’s Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology and Co-supervisor Dr Nathalie Viljoen from Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation to support environmental awareness and learning.

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Bester Chimbo and Professor Sunet Eybers from University of South Africa (UNISA) as part of the Women-in-Research Virtual Reality in Education project.

Their visit provided an opportunity to explore our cutting-edge AR/VR immersive technologies and engage in an insightful discussion on the transformative role of immersive learning in education, research, and innovation.
