Why is death still such a taboo topic?

We’ll talk about retirement.
Vacations.
Investments.
Healthcare.
Even what we want our lives to look like 10 or 20 years from now.

But bring up what happens when we die, or what our families would need if something happened to us?

Suddenly, the conversation gets uncomfortable.

We understand why. It’s not exactly light dinner-table conversation.

But avoiding it doesn’t make the issue disappear. It just means families are more likely to be figuring things out during a crisis instead of before one.

And maybe that’s the part we need to reframe.

Preparedness isn’t about being negative.

It’s about making things easier for the people you love.

Why do you think this is still such a hard topic for people to talk about?

Here’s something most people don’t know:

A Power of Attorney does not continue after someone dies.

Once the person dies, the authority under the POA ends.

That’s when other authority, such as an executor or personal representative, may come into play.

It’s one of those legal details families often don’t realize until they’re already dealing with a loss.

Knowing who can act and when matters.

Most families have one person who just… knows everything.
Where the paperwork is.
Who the insurance agent is.
Which accounts exist.
What the passwords are.
Who to call when something goes wrong.
That works, until that person is the one who is sick, injured, traveling, or otherwise unavailable.
Preparedness isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about making sure the people you trust aren’t forced to start from zero.
That is exactly the kind of problem DocuGuardian was built to help solve.

lori_kaplan_selsberg and David Selsberg didn’t build DocuGuardian because we think everyone needs prettier folders. 😊

We built it because we kept coming back to one question:

If something happened to one of us tomorrow, would the other person know everything they needed to know?

Not just the big legal documents.

The accounts.

The contacts.

The insurance.

The instructions.

The random important things that somehow only one person in the family knows.

That’s what DocuGuardian is really about.

Making a hard day a little less hard for the people you love. ā¤ļø

If your parent suddenly needed help tomorrow, would you know where to start?

These are 7 things worth having ready BEFORE there’s an emergency, from legal documents to medications, insurance, financial contacts and digital access.

You don’t need to take over everything today. You just don’t want to be starting from zero when something happens.

Save this list, and send it to the sibling who would probably end up helping.

October is Financial Planning Month.

And financial planning isn’t only about investments, retirement accounts, or how much you’ve saved.

It’s also about making sure the people you love can make sense of it all if they ever need to.

Do they know:

• What accounts exist?
• Where your insurance information is?
• Who your financial professionals are?
• Which accounts have beneficiaries?
• Where the important documents are?

A strong financial plan shouldn’t live entirely inside one person’s head.

So as October begins, here’s one simple thing to do:

Check your beneficiaries.

Look at your life insurance, 401(k), IRA, annuities, and other accounts with beneficiary designations.

Make sure they still reflect what you actually want.

A five-minute check now can prevent a very complicated surprise later.

Small steps can make a big difference.

Here’s a preparedness question that has nothing to do with dying:

What if you were suddenly unavailable for a week?

Could somebody else keep things running?

Pay something that couldn’t wait?

Find your insurance card?

Know your medications?

Feed the dog?

Reach the people they needed?

We spend so much time thinking preparedness means planning for the worst.

Sometimes it just means making life easier when life gets messy. ā¤ļøšŸ™šŸ™

You know where everything is.

Of course you do. šŸ˜‚

The insurance papers are in the file cabinet.

The passwords are… somewhere.

There’s something important in that kitchen drawer.

And that one folder on your computer makes PERFECT sense to you.

Now imagine somebody else trying to figure it all out.

That’s the real test.

Could someone who loves you find what they needed if they couldn’t ask you?

If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know where to start?

Or would they be searching through:

drawers,
email accounts,
old folders,
your phone,
the filing cabinet,
and whatever mysterious system only you understand? 😬

That’s one of the biggest reasons we built DocuGuardian.

It gives you one secure place to organize the information your family may someday need — and helps make sure the right people know it’s there.

Because no one should have to become a detective during an already difficult time.

Preparedness is really about reducing the number of things someone has to guess.

Which insurance company did they use?

Where are the important documents?

Who handles the finances?

What medications do they take?

Who should be called first?

What accounts even exist?

None of those questions seems especially complicated on an ordinary day.

But when someone is sick, unavailable, or gone, having to figure out ten little things at once can become a very big thing.

That is one of the reasons DocuGuardian was created.

Not because we believe people should spend their lives preparing for the worst.

Quite the opposite.

We believe people should be able to live their lives knowing the important things are handled.

Organized. Current. Protected. And accessible to the right people when they are needed.

Because preparedness is not about expecting something to happen.

It is about making life easier if it does.
