Tier 2 tip for week three. When you log a rough moment, add one line about what you did next. Moved his seat. Two-minute reset in the hallway. Called home.

Costs you about four seconds.

By October you'll have stopped caring what happened on September 14th, and you'll care enormously about which of the four things you tried actually moved him. That second line is the only place that answer lives. πŸ’‘

Two weeks in and you've already got the list. The kid who needs a check-in before first period, the one who comes apart after lunch, the one who's fine Tuesday and gone by Thursday.

No screener told you that. You just noticed, the way you always do.

The hard part is writing it down somewhere that isn't the back of a lesson plan, without giving up your prep period to do it. So start small. Those three kids you're already watching are the whole list for now. πŸ’›

Your behavior tracking should speak your school's language.

Some schools run green/yellow/red. Some don't do points at all, and asking a no-points culture to adopt a scoreboard is a losing battle. The tool should bend to your school, not the other way around.

Whatever you use, three rules travel everywhere: keep it consistent, keep it visible, keep it shame-free. πŸ’‘

Three weeks in, there's a moment coming.

The first time you pull up a student's trend and actually see it move. Not "I think the check-ins are helping." Seeing it: fewer rough afternoons, a better week than last week, in a line on a screen.

Show the student. Show the parent. That moment is the whole reason we track. βœ…

The behavior moment happens Tuesday morning. The documentation happens weeks later, when someone finally types up what everyone remembers.

By then it's a memory of a memory.

Real-time logging isn't more paperwork. It's the same paperwork, moved to the moment it's accurate. Thirty seconds on a phone at 10am beats thirty minutes of reconstruction in October.

Tier 2 tip: a note without an owner is a wish.

After any student conversation (team huddle, hallway check-in, Child Study), the note should answer three things: what we saw, what we're trying, and who owns the next step.

Most follow-ups don't fail because people don't care. They fail because nobody was named. Name a person and a date, every time. πŸ’‘

"Nobody comes to school, kid or adult, planning to fail today."

A principal we work with says this, and it changes how you read a rough morning. The student who blew up in second period didn't plan that. Something happened, and the plan they did have fell apart.

Behavior tracking isn't about catching kids failing. It's about catching the moment support was needed, so tomorrow's plan holds up a little longer than today's. πŸ’›

A principal's favorite question to her teachers: "Did you tell the kiddo?"

When a student hits their goal, it's easy to log it and move on to the next fire. But the kid is doing the hard work right alongside you, and seeing a green day in the moment is one of the biggest motivators there is.

"Great, the intervention's working! …Did you tell Carter?" "…Oh shoot. I didn't tell Carter."

Make the progress forward-facing. Let them see themselves winning. βœ…
