RAG, MCP and AI Agents are often mentioned in the same conversation. But they don’t do the same thing.
They can work together, but they’re not dependent on each other. An AI Agent can exist without RAG or MCP, and both RAG and MCP can be used without an agent.
RAG helps AI retrieve the right context from your knowledge sources.
MCP provides a standard way for AI applications to connect with external tools, data and systems.
AI Agents use context and tools to reason, make decisions and take action toward a goal.
Why does the distinction matter?
Because building a real AI system isn’t about choosing one technology over another. It’s about understanding what each one enables — and when it makes sense to use them together.
RAG retrieves. MCP connects. Agents act.
And when those capabilities are designed around a real business opportunity, AI can move from simply answering questions to actually operating inside the business.
