If you still have an old AT&T landline in California, the company wants to get rid of it.

AT&T says it plans to phase out traditional copper phone service starting June 1, 2027, and it’s going to the federal government to help make it happen, asking regulators to override California laws that currently require these lines to stay in service.

The company says only 3% of households still use traditional landlines and argues copper networks are outdated, expensive to maintain, vulnerable to theft, and unable to keep up with modern internet demands.

Customers would be moved to digital phone service that runs on fiber or wireless networks with battery backup. AT&T says people can keep their same phone number and still call 911, and it’s offering 3 months of free service to help customers transition.

AT&T also announced a $19 billion investment in California fiber and wireless infrastructure through 2030.

Just finished up an iPod repair for a customer that had been sitting dead for years.
Ended up being a lot more than just a battery - the original motherboard had severe water damage, so l had to swap in a replacement logic board and clean up the inside before it would boot again.
Always kind of satisfying bringing these old iPods back instead of seeing them get tossed. A lot of them still have real memories tied to them.
