Meet our Alumni Spotlight: Terrell Hemphill

Terrell Hemphill’s journey through Per Scholas Detroit was a transformative experience that he describes as both “humbling and enriching”. Today, he serves as a Learning Technology Analyst for V2X, where he plays a pivotal role in providing technical and non-technical training for a large automotive manufacturer.

In this high-impact position, Terrell manages virtual classroom software and serves as the ultimate escalation point for technical issues. As he puts it: “I act as a ‘final boss’ of tech support for the participants and instructors.”

Reflecting on his Per Scholas training, Terrell notes that:
The IT skills he gained equipped him to navigate a brand-new professional environment and carve out a space for himself
Beyond the technical curriculum, the program’s focus on professional development taught him that there is always room for growth

He believes that “communicating yourself effectively is the most transferable skill” an individual can possess

The program’s impact has stayed with him long after graduation. Terrell emphasizes that Per Scholas goes above and beyond to ensure its learners have what they need to succeed.

“Per Scholas has provided assistance, opportunity, and community from day 1”.

While the program provided the assistance and opportunity, Terrell remains firm in his belief that the ultimate value comes from personal initiative. He explains, “Per Scholas gave me a new set of tools for my corporate toolkit. It’s up to me to get value from those tools.”

For those currently in the program or considering a Per Scholas certification, Terrell offers candid advice on the realities of launching a tech career, noting that “the job hunt really is a hunt”.

He recommends staying persistent in your job search and taking advantage of the opportunities Per Scholas offers.
Above all, he reminds new graduates that “You have to ensure that the opportunity makes sense for you.”

This past Saturday, Per Scholas Detroit was honored to participate in the 5th Annual SHPE Detroit College Fair at Western International High School 🎓💻

It was inspiring to stand alongside so many incredible colleges, universities, and community partners all committed to helping students and families explore pathways to higher education, STEM careers, and future opportunities.

We had the chance to connect with students who are already dreaming big and asking the right questions about their next steps. Moments like these remind us why this work matters.

The name Per Scholas means “through the schools,” and that mission comes to life at events like this building bridges between education, training, and career pathways so students can see what’s possible and know that opportunity is within reach.

A heartfelt thank you to SHPE Detroit, Western International High School, and all the partners who made this event possible. Together, we are opening doors and creating pathways for the next generation of Detroit leaders. 💜
