68 Fender Bandmaster was blowing mains fuses caused by shorted original filter caps. Was all original minus tubes. It also had a dead power tube, burned screen-grid resistor, random loss of power tube bias, a couple bad preamp tubes, noisy plate resistors, 2 prong plug. So it got the usual treatment of all new electrolytic caps throughout, new B+ dropping resistors, balance resistors, screen-grid resistors, grid stoppers, rectifier diodes, rebuilt bias supply, bad cap in the tremolo replaced, reflow of all solder, plate resistors, power tubes, power cord, a couple preamp tubes, a bias, new tremolo LDR, anti tick mod to the tremolo.

Fender Custom Vibrolux repaired. Had noisy controls, a bad connection from the main board to EQ board of the normal channel, previous low quality mod work, and an issue with the reverb making lots of noise. The customer opted to replace the stock low quality IC brand filter caps so high quality F&T filter caps were installed, controls cleaned, connection to the EQ board repaired, and the main board was removed to access the remaining filter cap while reworking the previous mod which was a negative feedback added. These amps along with the Vibro King and a few other Fender amps lack a NFB so it’s not a bad idea, it was just executed lazily to avoid pulling the board. So that was removed and open spot on the board were utilized to have most of PI/NFB circuit there with an adjustable NFB pot with matching k**b on the chassis for a secure, reliable setup that allows for stock no NFB at one end and full NFB as found on a Deluxe, Bassman, or Twin on the opposite end of the pot. So now the stock touch sensitive, louder setting and quiet, clean tone of having a NFB is available with anything in between. Cleaning the controls solved the noise issues and this one’s like new again.

Ampeg SVT-4 Pro had no output from either channels. Was able to get it to intermittently work perfect sometimes for an extended period then randomly fade out. Very elusive issue with this one that ended up being a mix of 3 things. Some broken solder joints throughout both the main board containing the power supply and power amp along with the preamp board having issues with solder, dirty controls, and dirty contacts on the output relays. So new output protection relays were installed, solder was reworked throughout the amp, controls cleaned, connector stake connections tightened.

Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 had no output caused by a bad speaker connection. Repaired and checked it over including to see if bias drift had struck it yet. All checked good so it can keep rolling on the original board.

This Peavey Classic 30 had an issue of ghost notes due to failing original filter caps and bad power tubes as a result. New F&T filter caps were installed, stock pair of undersized screen-grid resistors were upgraded in value and additional screen-grid resistors added to the other two power tubes, solder reworked, a cleaning, loose speaker connection repaired, and finally a new matched quad of EL84’s installed. Now as good as new once again.

This Fender Super-Sonic 22 had a nasty distorted output caused by failed filter capacitors that started to red plate power tubes. New filter caps, bias supply cap, power tubes, a bias, shielding of the ribbon cable to lower noise, and a couple microphonic preamp tubes replaced on this one.

Mesa Triaxis preamp and 2:90 power amp had a squealing issue. Found power tubes on the B channel of the 2:90 to be failing so a whole new matched octet of Electro-Harmonix 6L6GC tubes were installed. A switching circuit transistor lead was found to be lying against a neighboring resistor possibly causing issues as well. The Triaxis was found to be problem-free.

1967 Fender Bassman came in with almost no output. Found the amp to be mostly original with no components replaced previously but some strange mismatched screws throughout. The amp was subjected to high humidity for a period of its life with lots of corrosion on the chassis and some excessive board leakage. It got all new electrolytic capacitors, B+ dropping resistors, plate resistors, mixing resistors, screen-grid resistors, grid stoppers, balance resistors, a rebuilt bias supply, new power cord wired correctly, and grounds ran direct to chassis. There was some DC leakage getting into the volume controls of both channels even after thoroughly cleaning and drying out the board. So a necessary cap was replaced due to leakage from the cap itself and some wiring rearranged to keep DC from entering the controls as much. Heavily mismatched and worn out power tubes were changed out and two bad preamp tubes replaced. A broken ground was also repaired. The amp was subjected to so much moisture over the years that half the resistors I would lift to replace or test would fall apart. But now it’s sounding great and rock solid reliable for many years again.
