Nvidia's next big rendering leap turned up months early, and not on purpose.
An early-access build of NBA 2K27 shipped carrying a file called nvngx_dlssnr.dll. That is DLSS 5 Neural Rendering, and at around 158MB it is roughly three times the size of a DLSS 4 file. Modders on the RenoDX Discord pulled it out and had it running inside Control within hours. Skyrim followed.
Then came the catch. One modder reported Control dropping from 71 fps to 35 fps on an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K, with the effect applied to character models only.
What that actually means for you:
Neural Rendering is the new headline piece of DLSS 5, and it is not an upscaler. It is an AI pass that reworks lighting, materials and detail, so on these early unofficial builds it costs frames rather than saving them.
Do not judge it on those numbers. This is unreleased code bolted into games it was never written for, measured by one person.
Nvidia has said DLSS 5 arrives in autumn 2026, RTX 50 series only at launch. Modders have already got it running on an RTX 4090 by swapping the CUDA binaries, and it has since been pushed onto RTX 20 and 30 cards. None of that is supported by Nvidia.
Our buying advice is simple. Do not pick a graphics card today on the strength of a leaked file. Buy for the frames you get right now, in the games you actually play.
