Be aware of a scam going round. We just received a whatsapp message beginning, "Hi mum, phone broke, this is my new number..."

Several problems with this:

1 I am a dad not a mum!
2 My daughters phone is in my account so I'd be the one dealing with replacing it. Also I'd get the same number ported if I did.
3 WhatsApp identified the number as a coming from a business.

A quick google for "Hi mum whatsapp scam" indicates that the next message in the chain would have been a request for money.

I immediately hit report on the message.

Please remain vigilant. If you have a concern that a message like this could be real, try ringing or messaging the old number. Try contacting them by other means. Whatever you do, dont transfer money or send gift card codes.

Stay safe and alert.

As a follow up to the video conferencing advice, here is some advice from Dawn at Creative Media about working from home.

5 Top Tips for Working from Home – Productively

As someone who has worked from home for six years, I’ve got used to motivating myself – though I do miss the banter that comes with working in an office.

Here are some quick tips to make your home work day more productive:

1. Have set hours
Start at the same time, finish at the same time, and take a lunch break every day. It doesn’t have to be to the minute.

2. Build exercise into your day
Yes, everyone’s heard this before, but it really makes a big difference, especially when dealing with the mid-afternoon slump. A walk at lunchtime will keep you feeling alert.

3. Have a ‘finishing up’ ritual
Make a definite break between the end of your work day and the start of your ‘home time’. I’ve got an antique desk that I shut up at the end of each day.

4. Leave the tv off
You wouldn’t turn it on in the office, so don’t turn it on at home until you’ve finished for the day.

5. Give yourself permission to enjoy the quiet times
You don’t have to be frantically busy every moment. If you have run out of meaningful work to do, allow yourself to knock off early rather than frittering away time doing unnecessary tasks.

Working from Home: Top Tips for Slashing Cyber Security Risks

As thousands of us are now working from home or thinking of doing so due to coronavirus, how do we keep data secure and avoid malware attacks? While there are corporate concerns about security of data in an insecure environment, and people using their own pcs, there are a couple of other issues if you are going to be using online conferencing tools like Skype, Teams or Zoom.
Here are some of the ways you can reduce risk:

• Check what your camera can see and make sure there is no sensitive information within shot (for example a credit card on your desk, post it notes with passwords or even just bills or documents with personal information).

• Don't blindly follow links to conferencing software from an email – these could be malicious. Instead, open the software from its official site or downloaded app.

• Make sure your smart assistant (Google, Alexa, Siri etc) won't pick up your computer speaker. At worst, this could compromise sensitive information and, at the very least, it could be embarrassing: "Alexa, order athlete’s foot cream..."

• And, as advised by one of our customers, remember when you are not wearing pj bottoms before you stand up to adjust the drapes.

If you need IT security support, get in touch: 0330 666 0888. We provide services in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and all surrounding areas – we additionally have staff in Gosport allowing us to cover the Portsmouth area.

Another Phishing email on the rounds.

This one claimed to be

"Codingtank Collaborative Teams
Board Project Team

we need you to follow up on this team urgently."

So if you have microsoft teams, watch out for this. If you receive emails like this don't just click the link.

Open teams directly first and see if the team mention is there, then navigate using teams don't use the link.

If it's not in teams, it's likely a fake email, check with your IT department.

If it's from an external party check back with them to find out if they sent it. But don't use email scammers tend to hack accounts and reply back saying its fine.

Another Password stealing phishing Email, again don't type your password into links from emails. If you receive an email the redirects you to prompt for credentials, no matter how authentic it looks, don't do it.

As your IT support for help, they would far rather say yes/no before you do it than have to worry about the breach afterwards.

If you are sure it's real, instead of just clicking the link, navigate directly to the url you already have for the service and see if it prompts you about it their.
