MEF Data Insight - Cards Are Increasingly Playing Second Fiddle To Digital Wallets

The rise of digital wallets highlights a broader shift in how consumers engage with online commerce.

According to the MEF Consumer Survey, between 2022 and 2026, digital wallet usage for online store payments increased by 11 percentage points globally, reaching 47%, while the use of credit and debit cards declined by 15 points to 32%.

Cards however retain relevance in this changing market by playing the important secondary role of funding mechanism for digital wallets.

The growing dominance of digital wallets reflects growing customer preference for payment journeys that are fast, secure, and seamless.

For leaders in retail, fintech, and digital commerce, optimizing checkout is not only about accepting more payment methods, but also about improving conversion, reducing friction, and strengthening customer trust.
