We've spent years asking what different generations want at work.

Maybe the better question is:
What do they all have in common?

Spoiler: It's not bean bags, ping-pong tables, or four-day workweeks.

Across every generation, people consistently value fair pay, meaningful work, flexibility, respect, and managers who care.

What workplace myth would you add to the list?

24/07/2026

Is setting boundaries at work selfish, or is it just essential self-care? 🤔
For International Self-Care Day, we asked the Reward Gateway team to draw the line on some highly relatable workplace scenarios.

The verdict?
🟩 Blocking 3 hours for deep focus? Self-care.
🟩 Telling your manager you're at full capacity on Monday morning? Self-care.
🟥 Cancelling a meeting 5 minutes before it starts? Okay, that one might be a little selfish... 😂

Our team proves that protecting your peace makes you a better colleague, not a selfish one.

Where do you draw the line?

We’re rolling in with the next episode of our In Conversation With series… featuring the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

Transforming employee engagement at scale isn’t easy - especially when your workforce is dispersed, diverse, and not always desk‑based.

Nick Cassell from DVSA shares how his team tackled this challenge head‑on by upgrading their employee benefits and recognition programme with Reward Gateway’s premium platform.

With over 5,000 employees - from driving examiners to vehicle inspectors out on the roads - DVSA needed an approach that reached everyone. Their inclusive communication strategy combined webinars, face‑to‑face presentations and real employee success stories. The impact speaks for itself:

✨ Engagement jumped from 67% to 94%
✨ Employee savings doubled
✨ Over 200 peer‑to‑peer ecards sent every month
✨ Voluntary turnover reduced from 81% to 76%

Manager: "How's the workload looking for this week?"
Employee: "Completely manageable, thanks!"
Employee's brain: [Calculates utility bills, imagines burning out, worries about grocery prices]

Sound familiar?

There’s a massive gap between what employees feel comfortable discussing with their managers and what’s actually keeping them awake at night.

Real workplace psychological safety isn't about expecting managers to be therapists; it's about providing the right infrastructure.

That’s exactly why the Reward Gateway Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) exists.

We’ve all had a moment where we had to manage up.

Maybe you clarified priorities.
Maybe you offered a solution instead of just raising a problem.
Maybe you adapted the way you communicate to help your manager succeed.

That’s managing up. It’s about strengthening the working relationship.

The phrase has picked up a bad reputation over the years, often mistaken for:

❌ Saying yes to everything
❌ Doing your manager’s job
❌ Influencing decisions behind the scenes

In reality, effective managing up is about partnership. It looks like:

✔️ Understanding your manager’s goals
✔️ Communicating openly and proactively
✔️ Bringing solutions, not just problems
✔️ Giving thoughtful, constructive feedback
✔️ Leading with empathy

When employees and managers work this way, everyone benefits: trust grows, communication improves and teams are better equipped to deliver great work together.

As organisations continue to evolve, managing up is becoming less about hierarchy and more about building high-performing relationships.

How do you encourage this kind of partnership on your team?

Yesterday, the RGER team swapped laptops and deadlines for an afternoon in Regent’s Park at our annual Sports Day.🏅⚽

There were teams, plenty of friendly competition, a bit of organised chaos, and the kind of laughter that happens when people who usually collaborate behind screens get to do something completely different together.

For a few hours, there were no targets or deadlines - just time to connect, have fun, and remember that strong teams are built on more than the work itself.

Three years running, and it’s become one of those fixtures nobody wants to miss.

Huge thanks to Go Mammoth® and our brilliant Experience Manager, Will Elliot, for hosting another great sports day. 💚
