Any bottle of Chartreuse made since 1991 tells you its own age.

Take a bottle. Look at the cap. There's a code starting with L, then six digits. Take the first three. Add 1084.

That's the year it was sealed.

Why 1084? Because that's the year Saint Bruno settled in the Chartreuse massif with six companions and founded the Carthusian Order — the same order still making the liqueur today, 942 years later. The cap code is a literal homage to the founding of the order.

— The 132 years it took to decipher the recipe (and the fact that it hasn't changed since 1764)

Two monks out of more than thirty at the Grande Chartreuse are allowed to know the full recipe at any time. The same arrangement as 1737.
