CYRIC is pleased to introduce MIMIR, a new project focused on the development of a new generation of miniaturised mid-infrared spectrometers and related software applications.

MIMIR builds on a key result from the Bromedir project, further developing portable FTIR spectrometer technology towards future handheld spectral analyser solutions.

The project aims to mature the technology further, improving the spectrometer optical core engine, system-level integration, calibration processes, and software interfaces.

MIMIR will focus on two application areas:
Soil health assessment
Human health diagnostics

The project will also support the path towards business readiness and the future commercialisation of handheld spectral analyser solutions.

The Consortium:
CYRIC - Coordinator, Cyprus
Si-Ware Systems - France
Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης - Greece
Consellería de Sanidade - Spain

Six projects, six different challenges, one shared direction: how photonics, sensors and AI can solve real-world problems.

GASPOF is building fibre-integrated gas sensors to detect leaks and emissions along existing telecom networks.

Bromedir develops compact infrared spectrometers to monitor agricultural products, hydrogen purity and fuel quality.

MultiLab integrates optical biosensors, microfluidics and machine learning into a lab-on-chip platform for rapid fever diagnostics and early warning of harmful algal blooms.

DAIry 4.0 applies AI and robotics to personalise milking and feeding for dairy cows.

Sofin Project designs adaptive photonic multi-sensors for monitoring high-voltage cables, telecommunication infrastructure and water networks.

Urbane-project promotes agroecology and One Health approaches in peri-urban farming across Africa.

Together, these projects show how CYRIC’s involvement extends across many more research and innovation activities, applying advanced technologies to deliver practical solutions for safer, smarter and more sustainable systems.

Writing research proposals is not an easy task.

It requires knowledge, skills, dedication and strong collaboration between technical, administrative and project teams.

CYRIC is pleased to mark a successful proposal season, with several new research and development projects selected for funding.

These upcoming projects aim to solve ongoing challenges across key European research priorities and open new opportunities for collaboration in subsequent technical and applied innovations.

We look forward to starting these new ventures with our partners and contributing to their successful implementation.

As Europe moves forward with the Horizon Europe 2026-2027 work programme, the European Commission is investing over €14 billion in research and innovation to strengthen competitiveness, support green transition, advance digital technologies and build resilience across Europe.

Almost €5 billion will be dedicated to climate goals, underlining the continued importance of sustainability-focused research and innovation.

The programme also gives strong emphasis to the digital transition, including new cross-cutting actions such as AI in Science, while expanding efforts to attract and retain top research talent in Europe through the Choose Europe initiative.

CYRIC aligns with these priorities through its research activities that contribute to Europe’s green and digital transitions, supporting innovation with practical value and real-world impact.

On 16 April 2026, CYRIC was represented by Panayiotis Philimis, Founder & CEO, at the European Commission event “From Vision to Action: Empowering Skills Development, Capacity Building and Inclusive Learning for Europe’s Digital Future” in Brussels.

The discussion focused on a key challenge for Europe: advanced digital infrastructure alone is not enough. To create real impact, it must be supported by the right skills, institutional capacity and inclusive learning frameworks.

During the panel on Europe’s innovation leadership in digital infrastructure, digital technology and industry, Panayiotis shared perspectives from CYRIC’s work in research, innovation and technology development for Digital Inclusion. CYRIC’s long-term commitment to initiatives like EU Code Week supports our ecosystem with localised resources and opportunities for women and marginalised groups.

For Europe’s digital transition to succeed, collaboration between public authorities, industry, research organisations and education stakeholders is essential. Skills development and capacity building must remain central to how we design, deploy and scale digital solutions.

Thank you to the European Broadband Competence Offices Network Support Facility, the Cyprus Broadband Competence Office, Υφυπουργείο Έρευνας, Καινοτομίας & Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus, and all contributors for supporting this important exchange.

CYRIC took part in SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics Europe 2026 in Strasbourg through the ECREAM_HORIZON cluster, in the framework of its ongoing projects Bromedir , GASPOF , MultiLab and SYMPHONY, with participation from Dr. Ronis Maximidis and Dr. Panayiota Demosthenous.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen visibility, engage with the wider photonics community, and present research activities within a broader European context.

The shared presence highlighted complementary work across compact spectroscopy, optical fibre gas sensing, lab-on-chip diagnostics and monitoring, and photonics-driven innovation.

We would like to thank SPIE for organising an event that brought together the photonics community and enabled valuable knowledge exchange and connections.
