Deep tech does not fail in the lab. It fails on the way to the factory.
The prototype works. The process behind it was never designed to run a thousand times, at cost, with the same tolerances. That distance is where the real engineering starts, and it is rarely funded as generously as the discovery that preceded it.
Getting from proof to production is a discipline of its own.
