That $50/month software isn't a bargain. It's a time bomb.

It starts with a low monthly fee. Then you need a "Pro" plan. Then you're paying for middleware to make it talk to your other tools. Then your team is spending two hours a day copy-pasting data between systems.

Here's what "good enough" software actually costs:

💰 License creep. That starter plan sounds great until you need SSO and get bumped to $300/user/month. I've seen costs jump 80% in a few years.

🔄 Integration tax. Your tools don't talk to each other. So your high-value employees spend their time exporting CSVs instead of selling.

🧱 The capability ceiling. Your business grows, but the software can't. You can't launch that new service because the platform "doesn't do that."

⏰ Productivity leaks. Two hours a day fighting a clunky interface = thousands of dollars in wasted payroll per employee per year.

Real example: A client's vendor shut down. The replacement vendor wanted $300K in new hardware. I built a custom system that worked with their existing equipment : and saved them $200K.

The math is simple: Custom software is an asset. "Good enough" software is a recurring expense that grows every year.

Your time zone is my time zone. And that's a competitive advantage.

The "follow-the-sun" model sounds great. You go to sleep, they work, you wake up to finished code. In reality? You wake up to a list of questions that stalls your project for another 24 hours.

Here's why working with a Canadian development team changes the game:

🗺️ Same time zone. Need a quick huddle at 2 PM? I'm there. Critical bug at 4 PM? I fix it today, not tomorrow.

📝 Real communication. No scripts. No support tickets. You talk directly to the engineers building your software.

🔒 Data sovereignty. Your data stays in Canada. PIPEDA compliance. Legal recourse you can actually enforce.

🎯 Cultural alignment. I understand North American business culture. No lost-in-translation moments that cost you weeks of rework.

At GiantByte, I don't throw code over the wall. I work side-by-side with you , because I'm in the same time zone, speaking the same language, and invested in the same outcome.

Yes, I cost more than an offshore shop. But I save you tens of thousands in rework, miscommunication, and missed deadlines.

5 red flags to watch for when hiring a software development partner.

You're not just buying an app. You're investing in infrastructure your business will rely on for years. Here's what most buyers miss:

1️⃣ "We'll learn it on the fly." If a vendor says this about your tech stack, run. I only use Canadian-based experts who already know the tech your project needs.

2️⃣ The fancy office. A chunk of your budget goes to downtown rent. GiantByte has no office : I put that money into the code, not the coffee machine.

3️⃣ Hidden outsourcing. They pitch local, but the work goes offshore. Ask who's actually writing your code.

4️⃣ Rigid tech stacks. "We're a React shop" is fine until you need something different. I'm platform-agnostic : I pick the best tool for your problem.

5️⃣ Skipping discovery. If they quote you after a 20-minute call, there's no way they understand your business. I start with deep discovery to get it right.

A Canadian-based team means legal alignment, data sovereignty, and developers who understand your time zone and your business culture.

Your ERP is great at counting money. But is it any good at counting parts in motion?

Most off-the-shelf systems are built “finance-first.” Your operators are still using clipboards while the shop floor gets left behind.

Here’s what happens when software is built “floor-first”:
🛠️ Real-time WIP tracking. Know where Job #402 is.
💰 True job costing. Capture actual labor, materials, and rework.
📦 Traceable inventory. Track raw steel to finished good and replenish based on production speed.

The Jim Lawrence Ironworks story says it all: barcode-driven picking eliminated errors entirely, with 45,000+ production orders tracked per year. The warehouse went from daily stock errors to “it just runs.”

Generic software forces your business into someone else’s template. I build custom manufacturing software around your actual workflow: your machines, operators, and unique “secret sauce.”

Web app or mobile app? The wrong choice costs you budget, time, and user adoption.

I help founders make this call every week. Here's the honest breakdown:

Custom web applications → Best for 80% of B2B use cases. Faster to market, one codebase to maintain, zero friction for users (no app store download required). If your tool is a dashboard, a billing system, or a customer portal, start here.

Native mobile apps → Win when your product needs deep hardware integration (camera, Bluetooth, GPS), offline capability, or daily habitual use. If your team is in a warehouse with spotty Wi-Fi, go mobile.

The middle path → Cross-platform frameworks like React Native. I write the logic once and deploy to both iOS and Android. Cost-efficient with a native feel.

Quick decision checklist:

→ How often will users engage? Once a month? Build a web app. Ten times a day on the go? Build a mobile app.
→ Do you need hardware access? Camera, Bluetooth, NFC? Mobile wins.
→ What's your maintenance budget? Mobile apps need constant updates for OS changes. Web apps are much more "set and forget."

At GiantByte, I'm not locked into one platform. I choose the technology that fits your problem : not the other way around. My Canadian-based team builds what actually works for your ROI.

Automation is a multiplier. Automate a broken process, and you just get broken results faster.

I've seen it happen. A company automates their billing : and suddenly they're sending a thousand wrong invoices instead of ten. The fear of "breaking the machine" keeps many operations teams stuck in spreadsheets.

Here's a better way. The 4-step blueprint for safe billing automation:

1️⃣ Audit the mess first. Clean your data, identify edge cases, and map every handoff before you automate a single line of code.

2️⃣ Choose the right path. Simple flat-rate subscriptions? Off-the-shelf works. Complex usage-based billing with hardware integration? You need custom software that fits your actual business model.

3️⃣ Build the data glue. Your billing system should talk to your CRM, your project management tools, and your accounting software. Data entered once should flow everywhere.

4️⃣ Install human safeguards. If an invoice is 50% higher than a client's average, the system should flag it : not send it. Anomaly detection keeps the human touch where it matters most.

The biggest trap I see? The "set and forget" mindset. Systems need regular audits. Pricing rules change. Mid-cycle prorations are where most errors happen.

At GiantByte, I don't flip switches and hope for the best. I build billing automation that's reliable, scalable, and designed around how you actually make money.

Stop paying the "SaaS Tax" on your revenue.

Most billing platforms charge a percentage of every transaction you process. At $10M in revenue, that 0.5%–1% cut turns into a $50K–$100K check every single year. You're being penalized for growing.

Off-the-shelf billing software works great if you sell "Basic," "Pro," and "Enterprise" plans. But what if your business is more complex? What if you need hardware-triggered billing from sensor data, tiered fleet accounts with hundreds of sub-users, or hybrid subscription + usage-based models?

When you force these into a rigid SaaS template, you end up with workarounds. Manual spreadsheets. More headcount just to manage the software. That's not automation : that's a hidden productivity drain.

I built a custom billing system for a client whose vendor shut down overnight. Instead of replacing $300K in hardware to fit a new vendor's product, I integrated directly with their existing equipment. Saved them $200K in infrastructure costs alone.

The ROI question isn't about the upfront price tag. It's about the next five years.

→ Custom systems = zero transaction fees, zero per-user penalties, zero workarounds.
→ SaaS = fees that grow every time you succeed.

If your finance team is drowning in spreadsheets bridging gaps in your billing logic, let's talk. I build custom billing systems that scale with you : not against you.
