š Most people donāt realize what disability support in Alberta actually looks like.
AISH provides up to around $1,900/month.
The new ADAP program is closer to $1,740/month.
Meanwhile, basic living costs (rent, food, utilities) are often $2,500 - $3,500+.
That gap isnāt about budgeting better.
Itās about math that just doesnāt make sense.
And thatās before considering something most people donāt think about:
Living with a disability often comes with extra costs - not fewer.
Medical supplies. Prescriptions. Mobility aids. Transportation. Support.
So no - this isnāt a āfree ride" and it's certainly no "over generous" life of luxury.
Itās a system meant to support people who canāt consistently work full-timeā¦
but doesnāt actually provide enough to live on.
There have also been some recent changes raising concerns:
ā¢ Some people may need to re-prove their disability through reassessments
ā¢ Community housing costs have increased for some recipients
ā¢ The federal disability benefit is being clawed back instead of added on
ā¢ Benefits havenāt kept up with real cost-of-living increases
ā ļø This isnāt about politics.
Disability doesnāt care how you vote.
Injury. Illness. Aging. Accidents.
If your ability to survive depends on your ability to work, you are closer to needing this system than you think. All it would take is one work accident... It could happen to any of us or our family members and friends.
These people arenāt asking for more than they need.
Theyāre asking for the ability to live with basic dignity. Can't we at least give them that?
