Two days in Washington. Two Salesforce events. A lot of great opportunity and work to do.

The tribal health work coming out of Alaska is the most practically instructive Health Cloud implementation in Indian Country I've seen. The Nonprofit Cloud platform is further along than the market realizes. And Public Sector Solutions has moved faster than most agencies have tracked, with a use case surface area broader than it gets credit for.

I left optimistic. I also left with a clear-eyed take on where the work still needs to happen before AI can do what everyone is hoping it will do in government. Spoiler: it starts with your data, not your AI roadmap.

Our founder Rusty Pickens participated in East Central University’s Tribal Education Summit by moderating a panel on AI and Data Sovereignty held during Native American Heritage Month. Panelists from Cherokee Nation, Chickasaw Nation, and the Navajo Nation/University of Oregon discussed how AI is changing data governance, education, and cultural stewardship in Tribal communities.

The audience raised questions about workforce pathways, education access, and infrastructure impacts. 580 Strategies is continuing work to support Tribal governments and organizations with tools and guidance for navigating AI in ways that reinforce tribal sovereignty and community public interest.

A statement from our founder:

A couple of weeks ago I was honored to be invited to Geneva by the UNHRC to speak on a panel about the intersection of AI policy and Indigenous sovereignty. It’s clear to me: we’re only at the beginning of this conversation for Indian Country and we need to catch up rapidly.

On our panel, we explored how AI can be both a tool of empowerment or yet another mechanism of modern colonization. The difference depends on who’s building it, who it serves, and whose values shape the product.

I spoke about what it means to approach this work from a mindset of reciprocity and gratitude instead of scarcity and extraction in order to ground AI development in tribal sovereignty, cultural protection, and long-term community benefit. This means building policies and platforms that reflect our values by design. But we’re missing two key things: 1) we need more Indigenous technologists at the table and 2) the ever-present challenge of organizing Indian Country at-scale around a broad set of ideals where our impact is magnified when we work together.

So here’s my ask: If you know an Indigenous technologist, data scientist, software engineer, student, or thinker who’s interested in this space, tag them or connect them with me. If you are that person, reach out. Let’s build something future generations will thank us for.

This conversation is just getting started and we need all hands and all nations and regions represented.
