Why does my document look fine on screen but print completely wrong?

The page looks perfect on your computer.

Then you print it—and suddenly the text is tiny, half the page is cut off, or everything is squeezed into one corner.

Often, the printer itself is not the problem.

Documents have settings for paper size, orientation, margins, scaling, and “fit to page.” If one of those does not match the paper you are using, the printed result can look completely different from the screen.

Don’t send the wrong version of an important document

When several copies of the same document are scattered across Downloads, Documents, and email attachments, it becomes surprisingly easy to send an older version by mistake.

Try this first when your computer says it can’t recognize a USB device

You plug in a camera, flash drive, keyboard, or other accessory—and nothing happens.

Before assuming the accessory is broken, unplug it and try a different USB port.

Ports can behave differently, especially on older computers. The connection may also be loose, the device may need power, or Windows may simply need a moment to recognize what was attached.

One thing not to do: force a connector that does not fit. USB plugs may look similar while being designed for completely different ports.

Why does my browser open to a page I never chose?

You open Chrome, Edge, or another browser and suddenly the first page looks different.

Maybe the search engine changed. Maybe a news page appears every time. Maybe several tabs open automatically.

That does not always mean your computer has a virus.

Why is spellcheck suddenly marking everything wrong?

Why is my keyboard suddenly typing the wrong thing?

You press one key and get another letter. Numbers appear where they should not. Symbols come out wrong. Or part of the keyboard seems to stop responding altogether.

Before assuming the keyboard is failing, check whether Caps Lock, Num Lock, or another keyboard mode was switched on by accident.

Laptops can also change input settings, especially after updates or when multiple language layouts are installed.

Why can I open this document but not type in it?

You double-click a file, it opens just fine, but when you try to make a change… nothing happens.

That does not always mean the document is broken.

Sometimes the file is a PDF instead of an editable document. Other times it may be marked “read only,” opened in Protected View, or saved in a format your program can display but not easily change.

The important thing is not to start clicking random buttons or downloading extra software just to force it open.
