NatWest serves over 7.5M personal customers and 850,000 businesses. Their Central Customer DNA Database is exactly what it sounds like, mission-critical. So when they decided to re-architect it for AWS to take advantage of SageMaker analytics, "good enough" wasn't on the table.

Their original plan leaned on Cloudera BDR and AWS Lambda scripts. The problems showed up fast:

-DistCp competing with production for cluster resources.
-Manual reconciliation of changes between runs.
-Open firewalls across nodes (security headache).

Second major outage in a few days.
