Getting a map, a 360 panorama and a set of marketing photos off a site is a lot easier than it used to be.

With DroneDeploy you can capture all three from one flight, almost entirely hands-off.

The process is simple...Draw a box around the area on the controller and hit start. The drone flies the route itself at 200 feet and captures a pre-con map in about four minutes. Drop a GCP over a mag nail to tie it into survey control. From the same spot, it grabs a 26-photo 360 panorama, then four marketing photos in 24 seconds. Back at the desk, drag every file into DroneDeploy and it sorts the map, the panorama and the photos into place.

The flight is the easy part. What matters is that the same shots come from the same spot every visit, so the record holds up when a sub files a claim or an owner asks for proof.

For the past six months we've been field testing the new XGRIDS PortalCam and bringing those captures into DroneDeploy Ground.

The early read is strong. The captures are immersive and the processing is smarter than we expected. The XGRIDS team reminds us of the early days of DJI, when quality hardware and easy workflows produced deliverables that spoke for themselves. The PortalCam fits that same mold.

What stands out most is watching this data come into DroneDeploy and seeing the range of use cases you're putting it to on your own sites.

One walk today. A record that lasts for years.

Layton Construction built a new student residence on an active university campus. Throughout the project, Senior Superintendent Josh Stewart's team kept a record of the work from the ground and from the air.

Inside, they ran DroneDeploy Ground 360 walks of every room on a weekly cadence. When the crew thought they'd lost a conduit, they cross-referenced those walk photos until they picked the run back up. Earlier scans of the rough openings shaped how they prefabbed the great room's radius wainscot.

Rather than harness up and climb to the rooftop for every question, the team flew them with DroneDeploy Aerial and brought the capture into trade coordination meetings, where everyone reviewed the detail together.

Ground covered the interior. Aerial reached what was too steep to walk. Together, Layton worked from one shared picture of the whole jobsite.

Ryan Hippensteel, surveyor in residence at DroneDeploy, shows how to tie your aerial targets to that existing control instead of a random point in the field. Lay a portable fabric target over the mag nail, center it, set your rover and you're out in about a minute.

When you tag GCPs after the flight, you know the point is the exact one your surveyor set. Ground and aerial data reference each other, with redundancy to troubleshoot when something looks off.

One reminder from the field: settle your coordinate reference system at the start of the job, not at the end when two maps won't line up.

For years the rule on site was simple. If you wanted a measurable record you flew a drone outside, or you brought in a scanner inside. A 360 camera gave you a clean visual walk, but you couldn't pull a real measurement off it.

A new capture method coming to DroneDeploy Ground changes that for interiors. Mobile 3D Scan turns the phone in your pocket into the capture device. You walk a space and it photographs it automatically as you move.

Here's the part that makes it work. We treat each phone photo the same way we treat a drone photo, so you get the same reconstruction and the same measurement tools you already use outside. It's close to walking the site with a drone, except the drone is the phone you already carry.

Trenches, mechanical rooms and underground utilities tend to vanish fastest, and now those are the conditions you can capture in 3D with no extra hardware at all.

At Digital Construction Week we asked attendees what they'd make a robot do if robots took over the world.

Most wanted coffee, laundry and someone to stand in the lunch queue.

One wanted a robot to walk the site and record progress, which is the one job drones already do – it's also our personal favorite 😉

A 360 walk turns one trip across the floor into a record you can use.

Walk at the pace you'd carry a cup of coffee. The camera captures two photos a second and leaves a breadcrumb trail across your floor plan. Upload from your phone, and DroneDeploy Ground handles the rest.

Each walk stacks on the last, so you can open any spot and compare it over time. You stop scrolling a camera roll for the photo that settles a question months later.
