Insta360's X6 is here, and DroneDeploy Ground now supports it for walks and panos.

In a dim stairwell, a walk captured on the X6 had enough detail to read signs in the capture, something the X5 couldn't match in the same light.

That gap in low light quality shows up into DroneDeploy Ground's floor and ceiling maps. A sharper walk means a cleaner map, one a team can trust when they check it against the plan weeks later.

Nobody can be everywhere at once.

DroneDeploy Ground gets a project team close.

The team at Steele & Freeman is running a project that is really six projects in one. Oscar Martyn carries an iPhone and a tablet everywhere he walks, and DroneDeploy Ground is what turns those captures into a record the whole project can use.

Photos, panoramas, interior walks and 3D scans are all consolidated in one place.

Getting earthworks volumes across the site used to take I & H Brown Ltd's engineers two or three days. Now it is a click on the weekly map.

Dean Molloy is the project manager for I&H Brown on the new University Monklands hospital, a bulk earthworks job with more than 1 million cubic meters of earth to move. His team has flown the site once a week with DroneDeploy for just over a year, which gives them precise quantities to track progress against.

Before DroneDeploy, recording where services went in meant sending a survey crew out with a camera. One flight across the site saves tens of hours of engineering time and gives them live record of what happened and when it happened.

This record has also changed how they work with their client. Dean said the map brings the client along on the job, so they can see what is getting built and where, and sign off on progress as it happens.

A trench gets backfilled once, and most teams come away with a few phone photos someone took from the edge.

We are running a webinar tomorrow with two people who do it differently. Jan Ahner, a superintendent at Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and John McDermott, senior VDC manager at Kast Construction, scan trenches and in-slab sleeves before backfill with an iPhone.

That record holds up six months later when a question comes up about what sits beneath the pour, in a way a photo album does not.

HOCHTIEF can ask for fresh survey data on their A1 Rhine Bridge project and have it captured the same day, with nobody driving out to the site.

This is how it works... a docked drone is stationed on the bridge full time. The dock is weatherproof and a pilot connects remotely once a week to launch it and run the survey. That pilot covers other sites the same day, which brings the cost of the service down and keeps people off an active job to collect data.

Each flight comes back as 2D and topographic maps and a 3D model in DroneDeploy. Hochtief then checks as-built against design, follows earthwork volumes and confirms quantities for contractors without booking an inspection visit.

Hundreds of workers from different companies are on this project, and one task slipping moves the finish date. A weekly survey catches that in a comparison rather than six months later, when the fix means rework.

The Beck Group flew the same mission over their project every week, from the first foundation pour through final closeout.

Every capture used the same flight path, the same altitude and the same standards. That repeatability is what makes the difference, because captures that line up with each other become one continuous record of the build.

The team can now go back to any week of the project and see exactly what the site looked like at any given moment of the build.

A pipe label is easy to read while the ceiling is still open. Without a photo of it, reading that same label after close takes a lift, a permit and an es**rt.

The images taken before close become a record of the building as it was actually built. With that record, a contractor can price a job without sending anyone out to open a ceiling first.

Stacy Witbeck builds transit and light rail that runs for miles. Documenting it used to mean survey equipment and a lot of driving.

Now a project team flies the whole line with a drone, then captures the rest from the ground. On one job they mapped 30 miles from the ground with a truck sitting on the rail. "They just drove," said Sam Stone, the company's Operations Technology Manager.

Flights cover the length of the line, ground photos pick up track and sidewalks up close, and it all lands in DroneDeploy so owners, designers and field crews see the same site.

Nobody had to mandate it. Anyone who gets a Part 107 license gets a drone and starts flying, and 110 pilots have done that across 86 sites. "It's one of the easiest tech initiatives I've pushed in this role," Stone said.
