Your email password is the key to your whole life online.

Think about it. Forgot your bank password? They email you. Same with Amazon, Facebook, everything. If someone gets into your email, they can reset every other account you have. That's why your email password needs to be your strongest one, and unique.

A few quick tips:

Write your most important passwords on paper and keep it somewhere safe at home. An address book works great.

Never reuse passwords, especially on email and banking.

Use a password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password if you want help keeping track.

Turn on two-factor authentication on your email. Seriously.

Ransomware tried to crash the party in Stevens Point last week. Thankfully, city staff caught it early, shut things down, and stopped it before any data was stolen. That's exactly how you want it to go.

But here's the thing: most people don't find out until their files are locked and someone's demanding $2,000 in Bitcoin. So let's talk prevention, because it's way cheaper than the cure:
• Back up your important files (and yes, actually test that the backup works)
• Keep your computer and software updated, even when it feels annoying
• Don't click links or open attachments you're not expecting, even from people you know
• Use strong passwords, and turn on two-factor authentication wherever it's offered
• Run real antivirus, not the free trial that expired in 2019 (windows defender is okay)

Scammers are working harder than ever to get your money — and your info.

Here's the thing about scams: they almost never look like scams. They look like your bank calling about suspicious activity. They look like a delivery company saying your package is stuck. They look like Microsoft "support" popping up on your screen with a scary warning.

A few things to remember:

If someone pressures you to act RIGHT NOW, that's a red flag. Real companies give you time. Scammers don't.

Nobody legitimate will ever ask for gift cards as payment. Not the IRS, not your bank, not "tech support." If someone wants you to buy gift cards and read them the numbers, hang up.
Don't click links in texts or emails you're not expecting. If your "bank" texts you about a problem, call the number on the back of your card instead.

Pop-ups saying your computer is infected are usually the infection. Close the window, don't call the number.

When in doubt, ask us first. Seriously. If something feels off — a weird email, a call that didn't sit right, a pop-up that scared you — bring your computer by or give us a call at (715) 341-3939. We'd rather spend two minutes telling you "you're fine" than see you lose money to a scammer.

The easiest security upgrade you'll do all year? Just let Windows update. 🔒

Those "Update and restart" pop-ups can feel like a nuisance, but every one of them patches holes that hackers actively look for. Most cyberattacks don't target you personally; they scan for computers running outdated software. An unpatched PC is an open door.

The good news: you don't have to do anything.
✅ Make sure Windows Update is turned ON
✅ Enable automatic updates so it happens while you sleep
✅ Restart when prompted — that's when updates actually finish installing

This phishing trick is so simple, you'll be glad you know about it before it happens.

You visit a site, click "I'm not a robot," and it "fails." A popup then tells you to press Windows Key + R, paste something with Ctrl + V, and hit Enter to fix it.

Here's the catch: that click already copied malware to your clipboard. Pasting it into the Run box installs it instantly—no download needed. From there, it can grab your passwords, saved logins, and banking info.

Real CAPTCHAs never ask you to press keyboard shortcuts. They only need a click or a quick puzzle. If a site tells you to open the Run box, close the tab. That's not a fix; that's the trap.

Pass this along to anyone who might not know.
