If your password is password123, 123456, or your dog's name followed by an exclamation point... we need to have a friendly chat. 😄

Here's the problem. If you use the same password everywhere, a data breach at one website can give criminals the key to your email, Facebook, bank account, and everything else. It's like using the same key for your house, your car, and your office.

Instead, use a different password for your important accounts and turn on two-factor authentication whenever it's available. That extra code sent to your phone or generated by an app can stop a hacker in their tracks, even if they know your password.

Good security doesn't have to be complicated. A few small changes today can save you a mountain of frustration tomorrow. If you'd like help making your devices and online accounts more secure, Rick Higbee Computer Services is just a phone call away. You crash, I dash!

I do computer tune-ups, repairs, cord cutting, and honestly... just about anything else that plugs in and makes noise. Whether it’s getting rid of cable, speeding up that sluggish PC, or figuring out why your printer only works when the moon is full — I’ve got you.

Do you know the best part about running a local business?

It’s not the technical puzzles or the completed projects. It is the handshake at the end of a job well done and the fact that most of my business comes from neighbors helping neighbors.

If I have ever helped you out of a tight spot, upgraded your setup, or just got things running the way they should, the highest compliment you can give me is a referral.

Next time you hear a friend, family member, or neighbor mention they are looking for reliable help, I would genuinely appreciate you throwing my name in the hat.

Thanks for keeping it local, and thank you for your support!

Tech Support or Tech Extortion?

I’ve been seeing a lot more of these "computer takeover" attempts lately. They’re getting more sophisticated and more convincing, but let’s be clear: they are always full of it.

The "Takeover" in a Nutshell
A criminal tricks you into giving them remote access to your device. Once they're in, they’ll lock you out, steal your data, or demand a "ransom" to fix problems they created.

Spot the Scams

The Screaming Pop-up: If your screen flashes "Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft NOW!", it’s a lie. Real tech companies do not use high-pressure scare tactics or demand you call a random 1-800 number.

The "Unexpected" Expert: If "Amazon," "Apple," or "Your Bank" calls you out of the blue to help with a security breach you didn't know you had, hang up. If you didn't start the conversation, it isn't tech support; it's a trap.

The Urgent Link: Emails or texts claiming your account is locked are just fishing for your password. Don't bite.

If You Already Clicked (Don't Panic, Just Act) If you realize mid-conversation that "Kevin from Windows" is actually just a guy in a basement somewhere, do this immediately:

Kill the Internet: Turn off your Wi-Fi or pull the plug.

Shut it Down: Power off the computer completely.

Freeze Your Life: Call your bank and change your passwords from a different device.

Call a Professional: Get it to me. I’ll scrub the system and make sure nobody is watching you through the digital curtains.

Stay skeptical out there. It’s a lot cheaper than paying a ransom.
