A true threat hunter proactively searches for evidence of attacker activity that existing controls have not already identified. The role requires curiosity, hypothesis-driven investigation and the ability to work across endpoint, network, identity and threat-intelligence data.

Hiring managers should evaluate how candidates form a hunting hypothesis, identify relevant evidence and turn findings into stronger detection capabilities.

Tool familiarity matters, but it is not the whole role. The strongest candidates can explain their investigative reasoning—not simply the platforms they have used.

The hardest AI hire is not your first one. It is your third and fourth.

The first one is usually someone you already knew, or someone a friend pointed you to. Then the pilot turns into a product, the roadmap doubles, and suddenly you need an MLOps engineer, a data engineer who gets your pipeline, and someone to own evaluation. All at once. All specialized. All wanted by everybody else.

That is where most teams hit the wall, and it is never for lack of trying.

Technical capability does not always transfer cleanly into a regulated environment.

An engineer may know the platform but still need months to understand the data, controls, documentation standards and operational constraints of healthcare, insurance, financial services, government or higher education.

That does not mean every candidate must come from the same industry. It does mean hiring teams should identify which domain knowledge is essential on day one and which knowledge can realistically be learned.

The strongest evaluation process considers technical depth and regulated-industry context independently rather than assuming one guarantees the other.
