Another local business woke up to a hacked website this week, the kind where visitors get a warning to ignore any emails from them. It is happening far more now that AI has made finding weak sites easy. Almost every break-in comes down to three gaps: themes and plugins that never get updated, no recent backup to restore from, and nobody watching the site for changes. If none of those are covered, it is not a question of if but when.

About 122,000 people live in Billings. The trade area the city actually serves is over 500,000.

That number comes from the City of Billings itself, and it stretches across eastern Montana, northern Wyoming and into the western Dakotas. One of the largest trade areas in the country.

Most Billings businesses market to the first number and never think about the rest.

Here's the part that costs you. Google weighs proximity heavily in local search, so somebody looking from Sheridan or Miles City may never see the Billings business that would serve them best. You can be doing everything right and still be invisible to a large share of the people you could genuinely help.

One thing worth doing this week, free, five minutes:
Open your Google Business Profile and look at the service area settings, not just your address. We've lost count of the businesses serving a 200-mile radius who have never once told Google as much.

46% of every Google search has local intent. Your next customer is already searching. The only question is whether they find you or the business down the street.

43% of local clicks go to the top three map results. Position four isn't a slightly worse position. It's functionally invisible.

Complete Google profiles get 7x more clicks than incomplete ones. Same business, same service, same town. Different result.

And 32% of local ranking weight sits in your Google profile alone, which means that free listing outranks the website you paid for.

Almost every ad account we take over has the same problem: every click going straight to the homepage. The ads are fine. The destination is the whole problem. Your homepage is a great overview of your business, which is exactly why it does not convert someone who clicked a targeted ad. Point that traffic at a page answering the specific thing they searched for, and you get better results for less spend.

We took on a client whose website looked great, right up until we tried to use it. We filled out the contact form, hit submit, and nothing happened. The button was broken.
