🎓 LS1 UNIVERSITY: OTDR vs. Power Meter Testing

Both tests check fiber—but they answer two different questions.

🔍 OTDR: “Where is the problem?”

An OTDR sends a pulse of light through the fiber and creates a map of the cable.

It can help locate:
• Splices
• Sharp bends
• Bad connections
• Breaks or damaged areas
• The end of the fiber

It also tells us approximately how far away each point is.

Think of an OTDR as a map that helps us find where something happened.

💡 POWER METER: “How much light made it through?”

A light source is connected at one end of the fiber, and a power meter is connected at the other.

The light source sends light through the cable. The meter measures how much light reaches the other end and how much was lost along the way.

Think of it like sending water through a hose and measuring how much comes out the other side.

✅ WHY USE BOTH?

The OTDR helps show where a problem may be.
The power meter measures how well the complete fiber connection carries light.

One gives us the map. The other gives us the final measurement. Together, they give us a more complete picture.

🔦 SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: FIBER TESTING

A fiber network is only as reliable as its performance.

Fiber testing helps identify faults, excessive loss, connection issues, bends, and breaks that can impact your network. Using tools like OTDR and optical power testing, our technicians can evaluate fiber performance and pinpoint where problems may be occurring.

Whether we’re testing a new installation or troubleshooting an existing network, accurate testing helps us find the problem and get to the solution faster.

Your network. Our priority.

🎓LS1 UNIVERSITY: What Is Fiber? 🎓

Fiber-optic cable is used to transport internet data and other information using light.

Inside the cable are extremely thin strands of glass called optical fibers. Each glass strand has a
protective, color-coded coating. The colors help technicians identify the correct fiber when they
are connecting, splicing, labeling, or testing it.
Internet data is turned into tiny pulses of light that travel through the center of the glass.

These light pulses can transport websites, emails, phone calls, streaming video, security-camera images, building communications, and much more.
Think of it like sending a message using a very fast flashlight—but the light stays inside a tiny glass pathway and travels over long distances.

Why is fiber used?

🎓 It can transport large amounts of internet data

🎓 It works at very high speeds

🎓 It can carry information over long distances

🎓 It is not affected by electrical interference like copper cabling can be

🎓 One cable can contain many color-coded fibers

The protective cable may look thick, but the actual glass fibers inside are very small and delicate.
That is why proper installation, splicing, cleaning, identification, and testing are so important.
In commercial buildings and riser systems, LS1 can install, splice, label, test, and document fiber
systems. On utility and solar-farm projects, LS1 provides specialized testing of the fiber installed
by the project’s contractor.

Simply put: Fiber uses tiny, color-coded strands of glass and pulses of light to transport internet
data quickly and reliably.
