What a great day at SMS Datacenter! 🤝

We had the honor of welcoming Mayor Larry Agran and members of the Irvine mayoral staff for a presentation and tour of our Kelvin Avenue facility.

We shared how local data center infrastructure helps Irvine businesses stay connected and secure, and had the opportunity to answer some great questions along the way.

Thank you for visiting, Mayor Agran, and for supporting Irvine's tech community! 📸

Ever feel like managing passwords is a full-time job? Good news — that's about to change.

TechRadar just published an interesting article on how passwords are slowly being phased out in favor of passkeys — a newer way to sign in using your fingerprint, face, or device instead of typing (and forgetting) passwords.

The key takeaway: Passkeys make logging in both safer and easier — protecting your business from phishing and password theft while saving your team from password fatigue.

If you're a business owner or make IT decisions for your company, this shift is worth understanding sooner rather than later. It affects everything from employee logins to how your customers access your services.

There's a new scam making the rounds, and it's convincing enough to fool careful users.

Here's how it works: scammers buy sponsored Google ads that look like official ChatGPT links. Click one, and you land on a realistic fake site claiming "limited availability," which sends you to a "backup domain." Then a fake CAPTCHA page asks you to open Windows' Run dialog and paste a command — and that command quietly installs malware on your computer.

The key takeaway: a real CAPTCHA will never ask you to run commands on your device — if a website does, close it immediately. It's a great reminder to share with your team, especially anyone who uses AI tools for work (so, basically everyone these days).

Quick question for business ownerss: when it comes to physical security, is a "quick fix" ever really a fix?

A new Security Magazine article explores how aftermarket door barricade devices — often sold as fast, budget-friendly protection — can actually backfire. They can violate fire and life-safety codes, block emergency responders, and even be turned against the very people they're meant to protect.

The key takeaway: real security is a balance, not a trade-off — hardware can't replace code-compliant solutions, good policies, and proper training. It's a smart reminder for any organization investing in safety: look past the quick fix and think about the whole picture.

If your business is using AI tools (or your employees are, with or without your blessing 👀), this one's for you.

A new article from ESET explains the "cybersecurity squeeze" facing small and mid-size businesses: AI agents can boost productivity, but every agent connected to your systems — with permissions to read files, send messages, or use tools — is also a potential way in for attackers. And on the other side of the coin, criminals are using AI to make old-school attacks like phishing dramatically more convincing. AI-automated phishing emails get clicked 54% of the time, versus just 12% for traditional ones.

Key takeaway: AI is expanding SMB security risks in two directions at once — creating brand-new threats around AI agents while making familiar attacks faster, cheaper, and harder to spot — so protection has to be designed around the time and expertise a small team actually has.

The good news? You don't need a big security department to stay safe — you need visibility over your AI tools and the right expert-backed protection. Read the full article here: https://na2.hubs.ly/H08n5x10

If you're a defense contractor preparing for CMMC, here's a question worth thinking about: do you need a one-time readiness assessment, or ongoing compliance support?

The answer matters more than you might think. A readiness assessment is a great starting point — it shows you where your gaps are and gives you a plan. But CMMC requires continuous readiness: up-to-date documentation, ongoing monitoring, and controls that stay operational all year long.

Treating it as a one-time project can leave you scrambling when an assessment window or contract deadline pops up unexpectedly.

Key takeaway: A readiness assessment shows you what needs fixing; managed compliance services keep you audit-ready year-round — and for many contractors, the smartest path is starting with an assessment, then moving to managed support.
