We’re hiring a Databricks Engineer.

This one’s hands-on from day one: building and optimizing Databricks pipelines that turn raw data into clean, business-ready layers - and owning them all the way through to production.

You’d be working in PySpark, SQL, and Delta Lake, running deployments through Azure DevOps, tuning jobs for performance and cost, and keeping data quality and governance tight with Unity Catalog.

We’re looking for someone with real hands-on Databricks experience, strong Python and SQL, and a solid grip on Delta Lake and ETL/ELT patterns.

Marathon Match 167 is live.

Here's the board: an N×N grid, a hand of letter tiles, and a peek at the next few tiles before they're drawn. Each turn you either place a word from the dictionary - across or down, building off a letter already on the board - or discard tiles and take a penalty. Place a letter that forms extra words, and those have to be real words too.

The goal is to score as high as you can by routing words through the bonus cells, while deciding when a tile is worth keeping and when it's dead weight. Simple rules, and a search space that rewards planning ahead.

Submissions close October 14 at 2:00 AM EST.

This match earns leaderboard points toward the 2026 Tournament, which runs through March 2027 - top 12 at season end advance to the Championship Round.

At Topcoder, turning a scoped solution into a delivery plan is still mostly manual work.

You spent days building it. The reviewer spends minutes scoring it.

Close that gap, and you win more.

Here's what most competitors miss: you know how your solution works, so you see it working. The reviewer doesn't. They see only what you put in front of them - the code, the README, the demo, the output. If it's not there, it doesn't count, no matter how good the thing in your head is.

Winners submit like the reviewer, not like the builder. Before they hit submit, they step back and look at their own work cold:
→ Can someone set this up from the README alone, with no help from me?
→ Does the demo actually show it working, end to end, without me narrating?
→ Are the requirements visibly met - not "I know I did that" but clearly there to see?
→ Does it handle the input a reviewer will try that I didn't?

None of that is extra talent. It's a shift in perspective - from "I know this works" to "can they see that it works?"

The best solution a reviewer can see and verify, it’s the one that wins.

We rebuilt the entire foundation of Topcoder.com.
The goal wasn't a new look - it was to change everything underneath and have you notice nothing.

You visit Topcoder, find a challenge, read a case study, and it just works. Keeping it that way meant rebuilding the foundation the whole site runs on.

We moved Topcoder.com off Netlify and Contentful onto Topcoder's own AWS delivery stack and a self-managed, open-source Payload CMS. In plain terms: most of the site is now pre-built and served from a global edge network, so pages load faster and stay up even if the content system is briefly down. Private storage and tighter access controls make it more secure. And every existing link, redirect, and page design was preserved through the move.

Meet Jaco Cronje - one of the people who makes Marathon Match what it is.

Jaco competed in the very first Marathon Match back in the early 2000s. Two decades later, he's mostly on the other side now: testing problems before they ever reach you. He writes his own solutions, hunts down the seed that crashes the tester, finds the edge case that breaks the scoring, and makes sure every problem is easy to start but genuinely hard to master.

It's careful, mostly invisible work - the kind you only notice when it's missing.

And lately it's gotten more interesting. As AI gets better at solving the straightforward stuff, Jaco's focus has shifted to designing problems where human creativity, intuition, and a clever idea can still beat the models. As he puts it, that's the part worth protecting - the reason these challenges stay fun.

When he's not breaking problems on purpose, he's out hiking, running, or growing chillies in his greenhouse.

Twenty years in, still making the challenges better - one broken edge case at a time.
