Marathon Match 165 is live - the first match of the 2026 Marathon Match Tournament season.

You're playing Battleships against the AI.

Hidden ships across a grid. Each turn, you can either shoot a single cell (cheap, low information) or scan a rectangular region (costly, but it tells you how many ship cells are in there). Goal: destroy them all at the lowest total cost.

The interesting part is the strategy. The competitors who win this one will find the right balance between scanning for information and shooting for impact.

Submissions close July 1, 2026 at 2 AM EST.

This match earns leaderboard points toward the Tournament that runs through March 31, 2027. Top 12 competitors at season end advance to the Championship Round.

The season is on. Best of luck!

The 2026 Marathon Match Tournament has begun.

Ten months of competition. One champion at the end.

Marathon Matches throughout the season, each earning points toward the leaderboard. Twelve finalists. One 24-hour championship round.

What's new this year: the entire Marathon Match infrastructure was rebuilt. Faster scoring, parallel test ex*****on, smoother experience from registration to results.

Marathon Match rewards iteration over single-shot solutions. The leaderboard moves as competitors refine their work. The best solutions come from the competitors who keep going.

The season starts now.

Meet the Team: Nandagopal Ramasamy

Some of you have probably worked with Nandagopal already - he's been quietly making complex Topcoder engagements run smoothly for a while now.

Role: Delivery Manager at Topcoder, based in India

Nanda leads multiple delivery engagements across AI, cloud, and enterprise projects. Internal teams, clients, the global community - he's the person making sure all the pieces fit, that the work moves on time and on quality.

What makes him stand out: he can engage with the technical decisions AND run the structure that holds an engagement together. Most people are one or the other. Nanda is both.

He's also been mentoring other delivery managers - quietly raising the bar for how Topcoder delivers across the board.

Outside work: chess, basketball, films. Same mix of strategic, disciplined, and creative thinking that shows up in how he runs projects.

The best delivery managers don't make the work look easy. They make the work actually be easy - for the customer, for the team, for everyone downstream.

That's Nanda.

New AI Challenge!

A new regulation lands. Compliance teams start over.

Reading, mapping, gap analysis, policy updates - all manually, every time.

The goal of this challenge: build a working prototype that automates the workflow using AI.

The solution should show how AI can turn regulatory change into a structured review package - while preserving human approval and traceability.

This isn't a wrapper-around-ChatGPT challenge. It calls for source citations, confidence scoring, semantic policy mapping, and a full audit trail.

Your choice of LLM (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini), React/Next.js front end, Python FastAPI back end.

Plus this counts toward the AI Exponential League season leaderboard - $5,000 in bonuses across the top 10 finishers.

If you've been looking for an AI challenge that builds your portfolio with real work - this is it.

Want your work seen by every Topcoder member?

We're redesigning the Opportunities experience in the Community App - and we need designers to shape it.

This is the first challenge using our new Design System. The work that wins helps set the standard for what comes next.

What you'll design:
• Opportunities listing (the page every member uses)
• Challenge Details, Submission, Manage Submission
• Desktop and mobile

Prizes: $1,000 / $500 / $150

You don't have to win 1st place to win the AI Exponential League.

The program is built to reward consistency - and the top spot on the season leaderboard pays $2,500.

Here's how it works:
✅ Every challenge has its own prizes
✅ Every challenge you enter adds points to your season ranking
✅ The top 10 at season end get bonus payouts on top of their challenge winnings
✅ Total bonus pool: $5,000 across the top 10 finishers

A member who finishes 2nd, 3rd, or even places lower across multiple challenges can outearn someone who wins one challenge and stops competing. Consistency adds up.

The season runs through July 31, 2026. There's still time to climb.

Check the leaderboard, enter the next challenge, keep building your rating.

Some of the best improvements happen behind the scenes - and this one's been in the works for a while.

We've rebuilt the Marathon Match system from the ground up: faster results, parallel processing, and automated system testing. Before we run real matches on it, we want the community's help making sure it's ready.

Here's how it works:
🔹 Compete in the Marathon Match 2026 Beta Test - run through the new system like a real match, using the provided submissions for test
https://www.topcoder.com/challenges/3188f834-cc35-4a49-b9ce-1d7f49be5e6d?tab=details

🔹 Report anything you find in the Beta Bug Hunt - bugs, crashes, security gaps

Your feedback shapes how the new system performs.

AI doesn't replace critical thinking.

It rewards it.

We've watched how people approach AI work across our challenges over the last year. The pattern is consistent.

The strongest AI work doesn't come from prompting a model and using what it returns.

It comes from people who:
✅ Research the problem before touching a model
✅ Structure their inputs deliberately - context, constraints, edge cases
✅ Iterate on the output, refining rather than accepting it
✅ Bring judgment about what "good" looks like for this specific problem

The skill isn't in operating the AI. It's in shaping the work around it.

The tools keep getting better. The craft of using them well becomes more valuable, not less.

If you're building with AI - this is where the real skill development happens.

If you're burning through tokens faster than expected, the cause is usually the same:

Too many iterations, too small.

Asking the AI to make one tiny change, testing, asking for another tiny change, testing again - each iteration costs a full call. Tokens add up fast.

How to do more per call:
→ Give the AI the full context and full goal upfront
→ Ask for multiple changes or alternatives in one request
→ Use a planning step before the build step
→ Run small tests locally, not against the API

The model you're using matters less than how you're using it.

Structured prompts cost less and produce better work.

It’s easy to forget what makes a global community so powerful.

It’s not just about skills.

It’s not just about code.

It’s the people.
The stories.
The friendships.

The fact that, across 190+ countries, thousands of members still feel like part of something bigger.

2 million members, one community.

Powering innovation and ex*****on for enterprises worldwide.

This video is short - but it captures the heartbeat of Topcoder.
