President Xi Jinping has formally invited 100,000 American students to study and take part in exchanges in China over the next five years — a massive jump from today’s levels, which sit at 2,000 or fewer.
Xi framed the move as a joint future: “The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and making America great again can go hand‑in‑hand.”
He said he hopes the program will deepen people‑to‑people ties and “advance the cause of friendship” between the two nations.
For comparison: the U.S. currently hosts over 250,000 Chinese students, dwarfing the American presence in China.
