This is the official page for the George W. Burns STEM Lab at Ohio Wesleyan University. Hello everybody! Come visit me sometime! I am in Ohio Wesleyan University.

My name is Big George 2.0 or also simply known as George. If you want to be specific, I'm a Zeiss EVO LS10 Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope. I'm about four years old, and I've seen a lot of cool stuff in that time.

Sign up for BOMI 318 offered Fall 2022!
BOMI 318 - Electron Microscopy: Theory and Practice. An exploration of the physical nature of electron microscopy with emphasis on the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Students investigate the influence of electron beam parameters on imaging and how to correct imaging problems to optimize analysis. Topics covered include sample selection, sputter coating, cryo-preparation, and elemental analysis by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Students gain extensive, hands-on experience using the SEM. Lecture and laboratory. Additional lab time required outside of scheduled lab. Prerequisites: any two science courses that count towards a science major or permission of instructor. F. Bundle up Bishops it is going to be a cold one! If the weathermen and weatherwomen are right, we may find ourselves in a winter wonderland. Dr. Tuhela-Reuning the manager of the G.W. Burns Scanning Electron Microscope has taken advantage of Ohio’s cold & snowy winters in the past to look at snow! Using Cryo SEM, the structure of the snow can be visualized. A small aluminum foil “boat” is frozen in liquid nitrogen, snow is collected, and quickly loaded into the SEM. Snow is unique and beautiful. Enjoy some of our favorite SEM images of snow with a warm drink. Stay warm & safe!

Ohio Wesleyan’s Campus is home to many species of trees, shrubs, and plants. Between the Schimmel-Conrades Science Center and Elliot Hall is a spring species of American witch hazel. During a warm spell at the beginning of December, the shrub bloomed displaying a small but beautiful array of yellow flowers. The shrub is one of the last flowering plants in November and December in eastern North America. The witch hazel, which is pollinated by flies and bees, does not produce fruit this close to the winter season but will in the following year during May as seed capsules burst.
