Construction Su***de Prevention Week was last week, but the conversation around mental health and safety needs to continue.
The construction industry has spent decades developing better ways to protect workers from physical hazards. Mental health has not always been viewed through that same safety lens.
That is changing.
On the Construction Industry Alliance for Su***de Prevention Above and Below podcast, Tim Irving shares what it took to bring su***de prevention into the construction safety conversation, including the resistance those early efforts faced and the progress that followed.
Today, initiatives like OSHA's Su***de Prevention Stand Down and the inclusion of mental health resources in OSHA 10 and 30 training show how far the industry has come.
But awareness weeks are only part of the work. Continuing to talk about mental health, creating space for workers to speak up, and making those conversations part of everyday safety culture are how progress continues.
Physical safety. Mental well-being. One safety culture.
