World Cotton Day was established to celebrate the positive impact cotton has on the farmers who grow it, and those who enjoy the benefits of cotton. For us, it allows us to bring up the challenges being faced by American cotton farmers.
This year, cotton farmers in the United States are estimated to lose $2.6 billion across the 9 million acres planted. From rising production costs, competition from synthetic fibers, and governmental initiatives sitting in flux, our farmers are in a difficult position.
This summer we visited Ronnie and Andrew Burleson, the 2rd and 3rd-generation cotton farmers who supply the cotton for some of our shirts. We talked about the challenges they’re facing in the market. Andrew said, “It’s just this uncertainty of not knowing what the rules of the game are going to be… and with the inconsistencies of tariffs and trade deals, we feel like we’re getting the raw end of that deal.”
While cotton farming has been tougher than ever in the past several years, Andrew still sees a path forward. “[Cotton] is resilient, and it’s been consistent for us. It’s not to say it doesn't have its challenges, but I see a future there.”
