Many business owners are surprised to learn that credit card processing rates can change twice each year; typically around April and October. These changes are often attributed to updates from the card brands. When was the last time you read the statement message on your monthly processing statement?

I got a call a while back telling me Visa and Mastercard had reviewed my company's processing rates.

Because we were considered low risk, we apparently qualified for "wholesale pricing."

Neither part of that is true. Visa and Mastercard don't review individual merchants' rates. And there's no such thing as wholesale pricing being offered to a merchant.

It sounded official. It sounded reassuring. It wasn't real.

Most business owners never shop for a processor. They get referred, they go to their bank, or they get a cold call, and the conversation almost always starts with "what's your rate?"

That's the wrong first question. In my latest post, I get into why, and what to ask instead.
