Mental health care in the U.S. has a funding problem, not just a staffing one.

New data shows 42% of the population (that's 144 million Americans) lives in a mental health professional shortage area.

Part of the reason: insurers pay less for the same visit.

A 2024 RTI parity study found psychiatrists are reimbursed 19% less than physician assistants for comparable office visits, and psychologists 23% less.

That gap shapes where patients end up seeking care. Patients go out-of-network 3.5x more often for behavioral health overall than for medical or surgical care.

And that rate climbs to 8.9x for psychiatrists and 10.6x for psychologists.

In May 2025, federal regulators paused enforcement of the 2024 mental health parity rule for at least 18 months.

This reverted oversight to a narrower 2013 standard and eased pressure on insurers to match behavioral health rates to medical care.

More than a year later, the price tag is clear: therapists average $159 for a private-pay session versus just $111 covered by insurance, a 36% difference.

Medicare pays around $154 for the same 60-minute session; most state Medicaid programs pay $108-$123.

It's no surprise 82% of clinicians who left insurance panels cite reimbursement as the reason.

Regulators are drawing a harder line around AI in therapy.

Colorado, Maine, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Vermont each passed 2026 laws barring AI systems form independently delivering therapy.

That brings the total to seven states with restrictions on AI therapy, joining Illinois and Nevada, which acted in 2025.

The trend runs counter to a common narrative that AI is poised to replace therapists outright.

For now, regulators are moving to keep a licensed human in the loop.

Social workers are getting closer to practicing across state lines without a separate license for each one.

28 states have now adopted the Social Work Licensure Compact, with the first multi-state license expected as soon as 2026.

The push behind it: Cutting the administrative burden of holding multiple state licenses, and improving access to care in underserved regions where behavioral health workforce shortages run deepest.

The compact is also built to support telehealth. Specifically, continuity of care when a client relocates or wants to keep seeing their therapist remotely.

As telehealth becomes a more standard way to deliver care, both federal and state policymakers see licensure portability as increasingly necessary to keep up.

For social work as a profession, that points toward a more mobile future. Clinicians are less boxes in by state lines, and there's more room to practice remotely.

The caveat: Outside the 28 states that have signed on, social workers still need a separate license to practice, so the shift is real but gradual.

Report experiencing burnout.

Dig deeper into the numbers and a pattern emerges:

Among those who describe themselves as burnt out, close to a third say they're considering leaving the profession altogether, compared with just 15% of their non-burnt-out peers.

Most of that group who say they'd leave expect to do it within 5 years, not decades from now.

It's a reminder that "burnout" isn't just a feeling that clinicians push through. For a meaningful share of behavioral health practitioners, it's actively shaping their career decisions.

Whether that means renegotiating caseloads, switching settings, or leaving the clinical work behind for something else entirely, the data suggests a lot of practitioners are already asking the questions this survey implies.

The speech-language pathology field is losing ground to demand, and for multiple reasons.

On the supply side, university programs graduate roughly 9,400 new SLPs a year, capped by seats in accredited graduate programs.

On the demand side, need is climbing: communication disorders now affect an estimated 1 in 12 children nationwide.

Retention makes the gap worse.

High caseloads, heavy paperwork, and low pay are pushing SLPs out of school-based roles specifically, and rural and underserved districts struggle hardest to recruit and retain therapists at all.

The result? 48% of school districts report difficulty filling SLP roles, and 64% have unfulfilled positions today.
