These two photos take me back to Data Care's 16th Anniversary celebration in 2022. At the time, I had been with the company for barely six months.

The person who was supposed to present one of our products had an emergency and couldn't make it. Suddenly, I was asked to step in.

To say I was nervous would be an understatement. Standing before colleagues, partners, and clients felt overwhelming. But what I remember most was seeing our Managing Director seated in the audience. As I presented, he kept making eye contact and gave me a reassuring thumbs-up. That simple gesture settled my nerves, and I delivered the presentation successfully.

Looking back, that wasn't just a presentation; it was one of the defining moments of my career. It taught me that growth often begins where comfort ends. It was one of the first moments that pushed me beyond my limits and gave me the confidence to keep stepping up.

During my time at Data Care, I grew professionally, taking on new responsibilities and eventually becoming a Quality Assurance Manager. Beyond the technical skills, Data Care taught me the value of ownership, continuous learning, and the importance of building technology solutions that solve real problems and create impact.

What always stood out to me was the trust placed in young professionals. Sometimes opportunities came before we felt ready, but those moments became some of our greatest lessons.

Congratulations to Data Care on 20 years of innovation and impact. Thank you for being part of my journey and for the experiences that continue to shape the professional I am today.

As you step into the next 20 years, my wish is that you continue to innovate boldly, invest in people, and create opportunities that transform careers and communities, just as you did for me.

Happy 20th Anniversary, Data Care (U) Limited!

Data Care (U) Ltd, together with Axis Solutions, is supporting the digital transformation of Zimbabweโ€™s public sector with the Zimbabwe Government Public Service Commission (PSC) Payroll and Pension solution, serving half a million and counting records.

Built around the evolving needs of public service, the solution leverages ProMISe ERP โ€“ HRMiS, customised to support efficient, reliable and scalable management of critical payroll and pension processes.

It was a pleasure bringing together the teams at Laprada for a luncheon with Dr. Amiel, Axis Director Elder Nyasha Mutetwa, Managing Director Erasmas, GovPay Project Director and Nyasha Mutasa Malvern, GovPay Project Manager, as we continue strengthening collaboration around digital solutions that make public-sector systems work better.

Digitalisation is not just about technology. It is about building systems that serve people, at scale.

Want better Ai answers? Start with better context.

Ai can only work with what you give it. Instead of asking a broad question, provide the purpose, context, audience and expected outcome.

For example, instead of:
โŒ โ€œWrite me a report.โ€

Try:
โœ… โ€œTurn these meeting notes into a one-page management report, highlighting key decisions, challenges and action points.โ€

The difference? Clearer input leads to more useful output.

As Ai becomes part of our everyday work, learning how to communicate with it effectively is becoming just as important as knowing how to use it.

Ai Tip from Data Care: Give AI better context and get better results.

Twenty years is more than a milestone it is a legacy of transforming lives, building careers, and creating solutions that make a difference. Happy 20th Anniversary, Data Care (U) Limited!

As I celebrate this remarkable achievement, I reflect on a journey that is closely connected to the Data Care family.

In 2012, I joined Data Care as a fresh graduate, full of ambition but with few connections. My father often told me, "The greatest gift I can give you is an education. I may not have the connections to find you a job, so let your knowledge and character open the doors for you." Those words became the foundation of my career.

Data Care gave me my first opportunity as an intern. It was here that I learned not only software development but also the importance of discipline, teamwork, integrity, and continuous learning. After my internship, I remained with the company until 2014 before moving to Flaxem System Enterprises Limited, a sister company, to pursue my passion for accounting and financial systems. That opportunity came through the confidence and recommendation of our Managing Director, Patrick Kagenda, whose belief in young talent has shaped many careers, including mine.

In 2020, I returned to Data Care as a Finance Analyst. Once again, the company invested in my growth, giving me opportunities to learn, lead, and take on greater responsibility. Over the years, I served as Finance Analyst, Human Resources and Administration Manager, and later General Manager. Each role challenged me and prepared me for the next.

Looking back, I realize Data Care gave me far more than a job. It shaped me into the professional I am today, strengthening not only my technical expertise but also my leadership, confidence, communication, problem-solving, and people skills.

For that, I will always be grateful.

Thank you for believing in young people, investing in talent, and creating an environment where careers are built and lives are transformed.

Happy 20th Anniversary, Data Care (U) Limited! May the next twenty years bring even greater innovation, impact, and success. I am proud to be part of this remarkable story.

The hardest chapter in the Journey of Data Care has been Identifying talent that are really interested in Software Engineering and ready to work to the dynamic requirements of the Clients. Software Development Projects are normally deliverable based and so are the payments. The issue of cash flow to keep paying salaries as you wait for the Client to validate and then make the payment was such a challenge. Monitoring the staff members to ensure they are focused on the work was also a challenge. We also got Tax issues on VAT related services, where one of our invoice papers kept on a statement โ€œInclusive of VATโ€ even when software developed in Uganda was VAT exempted.

This created heavy fines for us that almost closed the Company in 2015/2026. We were forced to shift to a cheaper place in Naalya and we agreed with the Landlord to renovate and occupy. Another interesting Chapter is retaining talent after they have gained experience. In one incident we got two International Companies opened operations in Uganda and we lost most of our experienced developers.

This awakened us that we went back to the Universities and started developing a pipeline of Software Engineers from 2nd year to the fourth year when they graduate. We have used this module until now ( July 2026) and it surely buffers us from those shocks as we also return the service to the Community.

Meeting the Patrick of 2006, I would tell him to study the industry of running the Software Industry beyond the Consultant in Software. Encourage the then Patrick to have varied skill sets at the Partnership/Board level and create sufficient buffer to handle the challenging moments of low cashflow. That the decision in 2015 to adopt International Standards based on ISO was pivotal.

What did you believe about Data Care in 2006 that has proven true and what surprised you?

As a Computer Scientist focused on Programming and System Development in 1993, I worked with Caltex Uganda Ltd the Oil Company then and in 1997 I joined Unilever Uganda as a Systems Architect focused on Software Development and User Support. In both Companies I supported the implementation of ERP. By Dec 1999, the ERP implementation was complete and the operations were fully automated. This provided me enough time while at work to focus on Research and build innovations for the Organization. However, I realized that I can use this time to do Consultancy in other organization. I resigned from my fulltime job and started supporting Unilever twice a week for ten(10) hours. I got Consultancies with Other Organizations like UNICEF, UNAIDS, Population Secretariat, ActionAid and many others. By 2004, I had two years where all the days in the year were sold out. I then realized a need to outsource some of the work that I had.

This i did with friends that I was with at the UNIVERSITY and others through the network. Most of these had their fulltime Jobs and would attempt to do work in their free time. When it came to getting the deliverables from these friends, the standard of work was a challenge, due to divided attention and in most cases they would not deliver on time. The ones available full time were not following the standard I was expecting from them. It then came to my realization that I needed to establish a machinery that would Identify talent, train them based on the standards and then deliver as per my requirement. I believed that with the right talent, tools and processes, we will deliver Enterprise Solutions that will be used in Uganda and beyond. In 2006, I started the project of forming a Company. I invited Three(3) Computer Scientist friends who allowed to Register Data Care Uganda Limited. These initial Directors continued working at their fulltime jobs but would provide support when available. One of my Clients that I used to support before starting Data Care offered me an Office (One room) where I put a desk that rested 3 desktops that I had purchased from IBM. We used to share this Office with two other Developers. What surprised me was that all the former Clients that I used to work with as an Individual Consultant allowed me to invoice them as a Company Data Care and this was pivotal.

By the end of the year 2006, we had moved to the second room so that one was a boardroom for presentations and meetings and the Devs would be in another room. We then hired an administrator. By the end of First year, we had got four(4) rooms. At this time the Landlord realized that we were using too much of the resources in the rented premises. He advised us to get a bigger Office. In 2007, we moved to another Office in the suburbs of Kampala called Mawanda road. At Mawanda road, we were more than 15 staff members and we got a Job with USAID to support Ministry of Health, Ministry of Gender and Other Organizations in Health Management Systems and the Orphans and Vulnerable MIS. We Partnered with another Company called Planet Systems to develop a solution for Procurement called ProCNET and got Clients like URA, CAA and others. In 2010, we started developing an ERP we called ProMISe ERP with mature modules in Monitoring and Evaluation, Human Resource, Procurement, Project Management and others. We encouraged our previous Clients that were using the stand alone version to adopt the ProMISe ERP. By 2013, we were now exporting our services to Kenya and Other Countries. In Kenya we worked with Trademark East Africa, East Africa Farmers Federation and many others.

In 2006, Patrick Kagenda set out with a bold belief that with the right talent, tools and processes, Data Care (U) Ltd could deliver enterprise solutions that would transform Ugandaโ€™s digital landscape and reach beyond its borders. That belief has carried the company through two decades of innovation, resilience and impact.
What began in a single rented room with three IBM desktops quickly grew into a trusted partner for organizations like USAID, World Bank, FAO, ASARECA. By 2010, Data Care (U) Ltd had launched ProMISe ERP, a homegrown enterprise solution with modules in Monitoring, HR, Procurement and Project Management. By 2013, the company was exporting services to Kenya, USA, UK and other countries, proving that the founding vision was not only possible but sustainable.

The surprises along the way were just as defining. Former consultancy clients seamlessly embraced Data Care (U) Ltd as a company, allowing Patrick to offer services of Digitalisation under the new brand of Data Care. That early trust was pivotal, turning a consultantโ€™s dream into a corporate reality now exporting in over 15 Countries.

The journey was not without turbulence. Identifying and retaining talent proved to be one of the hardest challenges. Cash flow constraints, tax penalties and the loss of experienced developers to international firms nearly crippled the company in 2015.
Yet resilience emerged from adversity. Data Care (U) Ltd built a university pipeline, nurturing engineers from their second year through graduation. This not only buffered against talent shocks but also reinforced the companyโ€™s commitment to community impact.
These lessons underscored a truth: success in software development is not just about code, but about systems that sustain people, processes and trust.

If Patrick could sit with the Patrick of 2006, he would urge him to look beyond consultancy and study the software industry as a whole. He would advise building varied skill sets at the board level, preparing buffers for cash flow shocks and embracing international standards earlier. The adoption of ISO frameworks in 2015 was pivotal and he would encourage his younger self to align with such standards sooner.

Twenty years later, Data Care (U) Ltd stands as proof that vision, resilience and community investment create lasting impact. From a one-room office to international exports, from talent struggles to pipelines of future engineers, the companyโ€™s story is one of belief realized and lessons learned.

As Patrick reflects, the journey has always been about more than software. It has been about building a machinery of talent, trust and innovation one that continues to shape Ugandaโ€™s digital future and expand its reach across borders.

Pause for a moment.

Ask yourself:

โœ… Is our biggest challenge technology or our processes?
โœ… Can we measure our current performance?
โœ… Will this reduce manual work?

The best technology investments solve real business problems not just add more tools.
