End of an era. Ricoh confirmed this week that every current Pentax K-series DSLR is discontinued, the KF and the K-1 Mark II being the last two. They were the last major DSLR line still in production.
So what comes after the DSLR? Swipe for the short version:
- Mirrorless is now the default. Canon, Nikon and Sony had already moved on, and the lenses are where the money goes.
- Retro is back. OM System launched a new PEN this week with film-era looks. Cameras that feel like cameras are selling again.
- Pentax isn’t finished. Ricoh says a “new concept” K-mount SLR is in development, with no date yet.
- Your photos outlive the camera. Whatever you shoot next, the files from the old one only survive if you print them.
If you’ve shot on a DSLR any time in the last 20 years, the best photos you ever took are probably still on a memory card or an old hard drive. Before you move on to a new system, bring those files in. A 4R print is $0.35 and a photobook fits a whole decade on one shelf.
