🧳📍Closing last week, we were at the table where Europe's next prevention strategy takes shape.
The EU Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation convened its Exchange Conference to collectively define the Strategic Orientations on radicalisation prevention for 2027-2029.
Across seven thematic priorities, practitioners, policymakers and researchers took stock of the past three years of work and discussing what comes next:
🔹 How do we respond to ideologies that are fragmenting and hybridising faster than frameworks can track?
🔹How can we address the rising challenges of the online environment, where generative AI, encrypted platforms and algorithmic amplification converge?
🔹What does it take to make the prison-to-community continuum work for individuals leaving detention, and secondary prevention approaches be duly integrated?
🔹How do local actors hold the line on polarisation and resilience when hybrid threats and foreign information manipulation arrive at the local level?
🔹And running through nearly every discussion: the radicalisation of youth, now accounting for 42% of terrorism-related investigations in Europe and North America, a threefold increase since 2021.
Getting the answers to these questions right matters, as they’ll shape the daily reality of practitioners, victims, and vulnerable persons across Europe.
As EUKH partners, Pedro Liberado, IPS CRO and Coordinator of our Radicalisation, Violent Extremism and Organised Crime Portfolio, contributed as a Discussant to the EU Thematic Priority focused on Prisons, Rehabilitation and Reintegration. Claire Machan, Coordinator of our Rehabilitation, Reintegration & Community Portfolio, supported the same group. With IPS' Consultant and Researcher, Bruna António, we also participated in discussions on the topic Global and Geopolitical Factors and Undesirable Foreign Influences.
Prevention happens in prisons, in communities, in schools, in the conversations that follow someone through the criminal justice system. That's part of the bridge we’re trying to build every day through a whole-of-society approach.
