It's the LARGEST reconstruction and expansion effort in Chinese civil aviation airport construction history. 🛫

The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Phase III Expansion Project, initiated in 2020, is a key component of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan, to establish a world-class airport cluster.

This ambitious project, a Going Digital Awards finalist, includes constructing two new runways, a new terminal, expanding an existing terminal, and a transportation center. Despite this extensive work, the airport's existing infrastructure remained operational, while the project teams adhered to a strict deadline.

Guangdong Airport Authority used Bentley software to implement a digital construction methodology, helping them deliver the complex project successfully. The project developers created 3D models to enhance collaboration, which allowed them to detect and resolve 3,200 potential conflicts early in the development process, thereby avoiding rework.

Upon completion in 2025, Baiyun Airport is projected to become the largest single airport in the world. 👀 The airport will boast five runways and two terminal areas to accommodate 120 million travelers annually and transport 3.8 million metric tons of cargo. The impressive plan also involves integrating six high-speed rail lines, three intercity lines, one metro line, and two highways, reinforcing its stature as a leading global aviation hub.

It's one of the world’s oldest airports, but will soon become one of the most advanced. Located on the southern edge of Sydney, with its two main runways stretching out into Botany Bay, the Sydney Airport spans 906 hectares and includes three runways, three terminals, and over 400 buildings.

Faced with complex, voluminous data, compatibility issues, and a diverse user base, Sydney Airport needed an open and user-friendly digital platform. Sydney Airport has started its journey toward the development of its digital twin - using a mix of CAD, spatial, reality, and business data - through Maps@SYD to help drive decision-making across Sydney’s airport’s operations.

Implementing a project like this was no small task. The team successfully wrangled massive amounts of complex data to create a comprehensive picture of the airport's operations that can be accessed via a common platform with the click of a button.
