At SGDC, we make time to learn, reflect, and better support one another. Participating in workshops like the AON Mental Health Awareness session helps us build awareness, strengthen empathy, and create a more supportive work environment.

𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃: Here’s another Tech Talk, this time from Earl on a small design change that saved the team time, noise, and manual cleanup.

𝐀 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧
𝘣𝘺 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘓𝘢𝘱𝘶𝘴 - 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳

We run background jobs using GCP Cloud Tasks.

About once a month, a task would get stuck retrying. Each retry triggered an alert, and the team would go through the same routine:

- Investigate what happened
- Find the task that is looping
- Manually delete it from the queue to stop the noise

It worked as a workaround, but it cost us time and attention.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙠𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 (𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙 𝙏𝙖𝙨𝙠𝙨' 𝙛𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙩):

Cloud Tasks is built for reliability. It guarantees at-least-once delivery, which means duplicates can happen. When our service treated a duplicate as an error, Cloud Tasks saw it as a failed attempt and retried.

So Cloud Tasks was behaving correctly. Our system design was the one amplifying the pain.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣

Instead of treating duplicates as failures, we changed the behavior to be safe under retries:

- If the work was already done, we treat the duplicate as a 𝘯𝘰-𝘰𝘱
- We return 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 so Cloud Tasks can stop retrying

The fix is still under review, but we're optimistic it will eliminate recurring alerts and manual cleanup.

Retries are a normal part of distributed systems. Operational burden can reveal opportunities to improve system design. Sometimes, the most effective cost-saving measure isn't an optimization—it's a thoughtful change in design.

Haraya launched in November 2024 at SGDC Cebu with a clear mission, build strong foundations, earn trust, and grow with purpose. We started as the smallest engineering team in SGDC, but we never let size define our impact.

From day one, we focused on what truly matters: ownership, accountability, and innovation.

We knew that working closely with our Japanese stakeholders would call for resilience and innovation, especially with language barriers. Instead of seeing them as limitations, we treated them as opportunities to improve communication, strengthen collaboration, and use AI-driven ways of working to move faster and smarter.

Through strong teamwork, intentional collaboration, and continuous improvement, we expanded growing our Cebu team by three new engineers and scaling our presence in Japan. Today, Haraya represents 25% of the entire Sansan Data Hub engineering unit.

This year-end 2025, our efforts were recognized.

Through a simple act of donating laptops, we hope to contribute to a learning space where every child has the chance to explore, discover, and grow with the right tools in hand.

This moment reminds us that meaningful impact starts with connection, and that even small steps can help shape brighter futures.

Through the Google Cloud Skills Challenge Program, engineers get more than just access to online courses. We work with:

- Curated learning paths and clear progress tracking
- Support for industry-recognized certifications

Last year, I joined the Associate-level track as my first serious dive into Google Cloud. I underestimated the time commitment and rushed through parts of it, but the experience still helped me build strong fundamentals, earn my certification, and grasp core cloud concepts more clearly.

This year, I stepped up to the Professional-level track with a different mindset. I slowed down, focused on design decisions, and connected each lab to real application scenarios. As I progressed, I noticed a shift in how I approached problems at work: I started thinking cloud-native first, designing around managed services, and considering scalability and reliability from the start.

This shift is possible because of SGDC's learning culture. Structured programs, supportive teams, and everyday knowledge-sharing turn theory into practice, especially when our projects already run on cloud infrastructure.

Cloud technology evolves quickly, but what keeps engineers relevant isn't just keeping up—it's having the space to learn continuously, apply intentionally, and grow thoughtfully.
