Ivan is the heart and soul of Putti. He's been here the longest of anyone, and if you've ever wondered who's holding our web development together, it's him.

At first, he can come across as a bit serious, even a little cold. When Ivan's working on something, he's completely locked in and won't let go until he's got to the bottom of it. But work with him for a few months, and you'll see he's actually one of the kindest, most generous people in the team.

He's also the most direct person you'll ever work with. No waffle, no dancing around things. He tells you what he thinks, backs it up with real experience, and then gets on with it. And he doesn't just skim code and hope for the best. He wants it to work properly and still work years from now. Quick patches aren't really his style. He treats a project like it's his own and looks for the fix that'll actually last.

What makes working with Ivan fun is that he's full of surprises. He brews his own b**r, and it's really good. On weekends, he takes his boat out on the water, and he's even crossed an ocean in a small boat once. Yes, really. We still don't quite know how to react when he mentions it casually over lunch.

Ivan, we're so glad you're on the team. Can't wait for what's next, and for the next story you drop on us.

Software gets built by people, not logos, and we think you should know ours.

Say hi to Ivan in the comments.

After 16 years of being on the receiving end of these conversations, here are the questions we would ask any dev company before signing, including us.

Who will actually build it. Whether you can talk to a client from two years ago, not two months. Who owns the code if you part ways. The answers tell you more than any portfolio.

We wrote the whole checklist up, red flags included: https://www.puttiapps.com/blog/how-to-vet-a-software-developer-nz/

Full automation sounds great until a decision actually matters. From our Launch Time series: why the businesses winning with AI keep a human as the final call. Full episode on our YouTube, link in bio.

Two new AI models came out this month, two days apart, at exactly the same price. Same US$10 in, US$50 out per million tokens.

We assumed that made the choice simple. It did the opposite.

When an independent tester measured what a task actually cost end to end, one model came out at roughly twice the other. Same price list, very different bill, because they use different amounts of words to get to the same answer. Then it flips again once your agent starts rereading the same documents every step.

What we took from it: the way an AI system is built moves the bill more than the model does. And you should never wire your business to one of them.

We have been noticing a pattern in conversations with NZ businesses lately. The software that felt like a bargain at 10 users has quietly become the most expensive line on the tech budget at 60, and nobody can quite say what it does that a spreadsheet could not.

Three signs keep showing up. Licence cost climbing faster than headcount. A team that spends more time bending its process to fit the tool than the tool spends helping them. And a vendor roadmap where the features you actually need have sat in "planned" for 18 months.

One of those is a warning. All three together is a business case.

What changed is the build side. A custom replacement used to mean a year and a six figure invoice, which made living with the bad fit the rational call. That risk has largely gone.

John wrote up the full thinking, including the order to work through the decision, on our blog: https://www.puttiapps.com/blog/replace-legacy-saas-with-custom-software-nz/

Curious whether any of the three feel familiar in your own stack.

Every dev agency website says roughly the same thing. Ours does too, and we have been wondering what actually separates teams once the conversation starts.

We wrote down four things we keep noticing. Some teams ask about your business first. Some show you shipped products instead of slides. Sometimes the people scoping the work are the people building it. And some talk about what could go wrong before you ask.

Curious what is on your list.

AI is confidently wrong about 10% of the time. Not unsure. Confident.

That line came up in our Launch Time conversation and it has stuck with us. An MIT study found around 95% of AI projects fail to deliver real value, and the pattern is usually the same: the business treats AI like traditional software, expecting it to be fast, accurate and predictable. It is not always right, and the harder part is that it does not know when it is wrong.

So we have been asking a simple question about every AI workflow we touch: where is 90% good enough, and where does a person need to check every single time? The answer is different for every business, and it is rarely where people expect.

This clip is from Launch Time Episode 12, The AI Truth No One Is Selling You. The full conversation is here: https://youtu.be/wQOyb80-Vx0

Curious where you draw that line in your own business.
