Only one manufacturing sector recorded revenue growth across the UK, Australia and New Zealand in the latest Manufacturing Health Index: personal care.
Revenue increased 32% in the UK, 85% in Australia and 46% in New Zealand year on year. In a dataset containing several sharp contractions, that consistency stands out.
What is driving personal care’s resilience? Are consumers protecting spending on everyday personal-care products? Are smaller luxuries holding their appeal when larger purchases feel harder to justify? The data cannot answer that, so we’d like to hear your theories in the comments.
What it does show is that manufacturers are supporting this growth with very different inventory strategies.
UK personal care manufacturers are generating more revenue while carrying 42% less stock than a year ago. In Australia, where personal care recorded the strongest revenue growth of any sector across the three markets, stock increased 25%. New Zealand manufacturers increased stock by 58% alongside 46% revenue growth.
The common challenge is profitability. Gross margins fell across all three markets: 22% in the UK, 4% in Australia and 5% in New Zealand.
Personal care manufacturers are growing, but higher revenue is not automatically producing stronger margins. Managing that growth means balancing product availability with the cost and cash-flow implications of carrying more inventory.
What do you think is behind personal care’s resilience-and can the sector sustain it profitably?
