We have some good news to share this week: Circularise has joined the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) as a General Supporter member.

ASI sets standards and runs certification for aluminium, from bauxite mining through to use and recycling. We joined to bring what we've learned about traceability and mass balance to aluminium, and to take part in ASI's work on chain of custody.

With the battery passport deadline coming up, we've introduced new pricing and tiers for our battery passport platform, designed so you can do it yourself. Plans start at €420 a month for 1,000 passports a year, or €790 a month for 5,000, priced annually. You can start a free trial and set up your passports yourself.

Every plan lets you enter data by hand, import it from Excel or CSV, create and manage passports through our API, or have AI read your PDF spec sheets and product web pages.

If you work with concrete or steel in construction, whether you're making it, selling it, buying it, or recycling it, this upcoming webinar is for you.

EU rules are moving towards a Digital Product Passport for construction products. It's a digital record of what a product is made of, where it came from, and how it can be reused or recycled. Concrete and steel are both on that timeline, and steel has a second set of EU rules on the way, which the European Commission is planning to adopt by the end of this year.

So what will a passport for a precast concrete element or a steel beam need to contain, and who provides the data? On Tuesday 17 November, the Toekomstbestendige Leefomgeving working group is running a free live webinar on these questions, with speakers from Axionomic, BouwLab, DigiGo, TNO, and Circularise. It covers use cases from both industries, what's coming in the regulation, and how mass balance can support green steel claims, with time at the end for your own questions.

🔋 If you've ever wondered what happens to an electric car's battery after the car is scrapped, here's a project we're part of that's working on it.

CarMine brings together 11 European partners to take the batteries and motors out of end-of-life electric cars and recover what's valuable inside: lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Those materials then go back into new products.

At the kick-off in Portugal in September, the partners watched a battery being crushed. It goes in as a whole battery pack and comes out as shredded flakes, and nobody can tell by looking where that material started.

We're building the Digital Product Passport that keeps that information attached. It's a digital record that travels with the recovered material from one partner to the next, so a company that uses it later can see where it came from and how it was processed.

As a supply chain traceability platform, this is the problem we spend our days on. Most manufacturers can tell you who they buy from. Far fewer can tell you what their product is actually made of, because that answer sits with a supplier two or three steps further back who has no particular reason to share it. Our platform is how that data gets collected, followed through production, and passed on to whoever has the right to see it.

Japan is a big part of this for us. Mitsubishi Chemical runs mass balance credits on the platform at its chemical recycling plant in Ibaraki, and Teijin used it to trace recycled polycarbonate recovered from end-of-life vehicles.

📢 Ever wondered what's inside a digital product passport? The FAIR-PV solar module in Amsterdam has one you can scan.

It sits on the roof of the Innovation Pavilion at Marineterrein in Amsterdam, with a QR code beside it. We built the passport with TU Delft, and it keeps a running record of the panel: what it's made of, how it was manufactured, and its maintenance history. That record is what a repairer or recycler uses to decide whether the panel should be repaired, refurbished, remanufactured, or recycled.

The panel itself is designed to come apart. Conventional panels are sealed with heat-bonded lamination, which makes the layers impossible to separate and the panels expensive to recycle. TU Delft and Biosphere Solar used a liquid layer instead, so the materials come back out.

We've just published a press release on the project. Thank you to AMS Institute, TU Delft, and Biosphere Solar, and to the Dutch government's KIA-CE programme for funding it.

Good news for a network we're proud to be part of.

Digital Production Networks (DPN) has received funding approval for its second phase, which runs through to the end of 2028. It's a German-Dutch network of companies and research institutions working on manufacturing, digitalisation, and the circular economy, and its focus areas are things we work on every day: digital product passports, material traceability, secure data sharing across organisations, and circular economy technologies.

There are already six collaborative R&D projects running, with five more in development.

If you sell batteries into the EU market, or supply companies that do, this is for you.

Verified data on material origin, carbon footprint, and supply chain practices gives buyers something to compare. Procurement changes when sustainability is verifiable rather than declared. For end-of-life and second-life businesses, per-unit state-of-health data changes what an ageing battery is worth.

If you work with plastic packaging and recycled content is on your list this year, here's a problem worth knowing about.

If you recycle plastic chemically, breaking it back down into its building blocks, what comes out is identical to plastic made from oil. Same molecules, same quality, clean enough for food packaging. That's the whole reason the technology is useful.

It's also why proving you used it is so hard. Nothing in the finished packaging marks the recycled part as recycled. There's no test for it.

Under the EU's packaging regulation, plastic packaging has to hit minimum recycled content from 2030. So how do you prove a number that nobody can measure? You account for it instead. You track what goes into the plant and what comes out, and you have the books audited. The method is called mass balance.
