Millions of kitchens around the world now have an air fryer, and the idea came from a Dutch engineer.

In 2006, Fred van der Weij invented a way to 'fry' food with hot air instead of a bath of oil.

Four years later he took his invention to Philips, the electronics giant from Eindhoven.

Philips launched the Airfryer in 2010 at the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin.

The trick: a heating element right above the food, plus a strong stream of hot air blown down and bounced back up, so the food is heated from all sides. Philips called it Rapid Air technology.

Fitting, for a country that loves its fries and croquettes.

Since then, air fryers from dozens of brands have conquered kitchens across the world, especially in the United States.

So the next time you make crispy wings with barely a drop of oil, you can thank a Dutchman.
