Think about the last time you searched for something online and an AI assistant gave you a summary. Did you still feel the need to click through to the original website?

Maybe. Maybe not.

That small behaviour change is reshaping how people discover information.

According to the RANKED 2026 Report, traffic to Nigerian digital media platforms declined by 26.2% in 2025.

That does not mean journalism is becoming less valuable. It means people are taking a different path to information. Instead of browsing multiple websites, many now ask AI assistants to do the searching and summarising for them.

For communications teams, this changes the goal from simply getting published to creating stories that are credible, discoverable, and valuable enough to be found, trusted, and referenced wherever people search for information.

The RANKED 2026 Report examines this shift and other major trends shaping Africa’s media landscape across 13 African countries.

Search is changing, and so is the way people discover brands.

The rise of AI-powered search and answer engines is reshaping how information is found and consumed. That means discoverability is no longer just about being visible. It's about creating credible, well-structured stories that are easy to find, understand, and reference.

This shift is one of the key themes explored in the RANKED 2026 Report and a conversation we'll continue unpacking in the weeks ahead.

One of the latest additions to SquirrelPR 2.0 is SMT Monitor, our media intelligence solution designed to help organisations track conversations, analyze sentiment, monitor competitors, and gain actionable reputation insights.

Every day, conversations about brands are happening across news platforms, websites, and social media channels. Many organizations only discover these conversations after they have already gained momentum.

SMT Monitor helps communication teams stay ahead by bringing media mentions and social conversations into one place, making it easier to understand what is being said, how audiences are responding, and where attention is shifting.

July is almost over. Before your team jumps into August campaigns, take a moment to look back.

Which stories resonated?
Which journalist relationships moved forward?
What slowed your team down?
And what deserves to be left behind before the new month begins?

Every campaign leaves behind more than coverage. It leaves behind useful insights.

What's one thing you'll do differently next month?

Today, we're celebrating our CTO and Co-founder, Ezechukwu James Ikechukwu. 🎉

James has consistently shown a deep understanding of where PR and communications are headed, and an even stronger commitment to building technology that keeps pace with that evolution.

The launch of SquirrelPR 2.0 reflects that approach. James has helped transform years of understanding PR workflows, newsroom realities, and communication challenges into technology that enables teams to work smarter, make better decisions, and adapt to the changing demands of modern communications.

Today, we celebrate not only another year of life but also the curiosity, leadership, and innovation behind the technology powering modern PR across Africa.

Happy Birthday, James. Thank you for the dedication and for continuing to build solutions that move our industry forward.

From all of us at SquirrelPR, we wish you many more years of impact, growth, and success. 💙
