These are three-way Italian floorstanders built around drivers Sonus Faber engineered themselves. The midrange unit is made from an air-dried mix of cellulose pulp, kapok, and kenaf fibre -- materials chosen to damp cone resonances at a structural level. The tweeter uses their Damped Apex Dome technology. The port is Stealth Ultraflex, an aperiodic design that gives the bass more control than a conventional reflex.

The Nova II is the smaller of the two -- and the one reviewers consistently describe as having one of the best midranges at its price point. Voices, acoustic instruments, anything with harmonic complexity -- it handles all of it with a naturalness that's hard to fault.

The Nova III steps up to a taller cabinet with two 7-inch woofers and a fuller low end. SoundStage Ultra called it their favourite speaker under USD15,000. That review still holds up.

Sonus Faber just released the third generation of the Olympica collection. And it's the best one yet.

The Olympica G3 brings together five speakers — two floorstanders, a bookshelf, a center channel, and an on-wall — all built around the same philosophy: that a loudspeaker should disappear into the music, not announce itself.

The centrepiece of the new generation is the Camelia midrange driver. Designed in-house, shaped after the geometry of the camellia flower, it reduces resonance at a structural level. The result is a midrange that's cleaner and more natural than anything in the previous Olympica line. The technology comes down directly from Sonus Faber's flagship Suprema — Sonus Faber's most technically ambitious loudspeaker, built without compromise on cost.

The cabinet is what you'd expect from Sonus Faber: handcrafted Walnut or Wenge veneer, machined aluminium accents, lute-inspired curves. Inspired by Palladian architecture. Built in Vicenza, Italy — the same city as the Teatro Olimpico, the architectural reference that gives the collection its name.

What does Italian craftsmanship actually sound like?

The Sonus Faber Lumina V is a 3-way floorstander handbuilt in Vicenza, Italy. 1" DAD silk dome tweeter, 150mm midrange, two 150mm woofers, down to 40Hz. Available in wenge and walnut. At 4Ω and 90dB sensitivity, it plays loud and goes deep — and the Evo 150SE's 150W has no problem driving it.

The McIntosh MA8950 is a 200W solid state integrated amplifier built in Binghamton, New York. It runs an Autoformer output stage — that means consistent 200W regardless of whether the speaker is 8Ω, 4Ω, or 2Ω. Most amplifiers lose power and control as impedance drops. The Autoformer stops that from happening. The DA2 Digital Audio Module inside is a Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit DAC with 16 inputs including both MM and MC phono stages.

The MA8950 has no built-in streaming, so the McIntosh DS200 fills that role. It is a dedicated streaming DAC built around the same Quad Balanced 32-bit converter architecture. AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.0, Google Cast, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready — all covered.
